Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Electroencephalography is an electrophysiological method for recording the electrical activity of the brain. It uses multiple electrodes placed on the scalp that measure the variations of the voltage at various locations.

EEG stands out as a technique for its high temporal resolutions (in the order of milliseconds), easy of use and feasibility, non-invasive procedure, and relative low cost.

Differently from behavioural techniques, it does not need an overt response and is sensitive to different stages of processing. Furthermore, it has better temporal resolution and is more tolerant to movement artefacts than Functional Magnetic Resonance (fMRI).

Eye-Tracking

Eye-tracking is a technology that tracks and records eye-movements. It uses the reflection of near infra-red light on the cornea to estimate the location of eye-gaze.

Remote eye-trackers can be attached to the bottom of a screen. By reflecting on the cornea of the person sitting in front of the screen, they track a record the position of the gaze on the screen.

Eye movements may reveal unconscious, spontaneous behaviour while it happens in real-time. Also, it provides quantitative, detailed measures. It is mobile and versatile and can be aasily combined with other methods (EEG).
