Year 7 Camp

The Year 7 camp 2019 was at Kianinny Resort Tathra. On Wednesday 27th March 104 Students set off from Bomaderry High School at 7.30 am. They were keen and eager to wave goodbye to their parents and start their adventure.

At the camp the students were introduced to their group members and then each group was given a container of supplies and a raw egg. Each group was a different colour and they had to make a house for their egg to keep it safe for the duration of the camp, while they carried it around to each activity. Most groups were very good at looking after their egg, however, sadly the purple group’s egg did not survive.

There were 6 groups:

Red with Ms Opferkuch, Yellow with Ms Dempsey, Purple with Mr Burgin, Green with Ms Davis, Dark Blue with Mr Host and Light Blue with Mr Smith. Each group earned points during each activity, including night activities.

Throughout the three days each group got to participate in Raft Building, Canoeing, Archery, Swimming, Ropes Course, Team Rescue, Putt Putt Golf, Flying Fox, Advanced Orienteering and much more. It was wonderful to see students making new friends and encouraging each other during the more difficult activities. They really worked as a team and were very helpful.

On the first night all the students participated in Team building Activities and "Minute To Win It' games.

On the second night everyone participated in dance games. Students played musical shapes, limbo & the Ghostbusters game. A great time was had by all.

The group scores were very close and on the final day the DARK BLUE group was presented gold medals for being the overall winners.

I would like to thank both the staff and students who attended camp Kianinny at Tathra. The camp was a success due to everyone’s enthusiasm and cooperation.

Tournament of Minds

Bomaderry High has been competing in the Tournament of Minds competition for a number of years, and has been quite successful. Last year we had three teams compete and received Tournament Honours for two of the teams.

The competition is divided into four categories:

1. The Arts

2. STEM

3. Language Literature

4. Social Science

Teams are given a challenge in the category of their choice and need to solve this problem within a 6 week timeframe, and present their solution in the form of a drama in a 3m by 3m square in 10 minutes. Every team in the category has the same challenge to complete.

There is also a Spontaneous Challenge where the team is given a challenge to solve together in about 4 minutes and present immediately. Every team is given the same spontaneous challenge.

This year the teams have the first 6 weeks of Term 3 to solve their problem. The South Coast Regional competition will be on Sunday 1st September at the University of Wollongong.

It is open to teams of 7 students from years 7 to 10. A team must have 2 Year 7 students, and no more than 4 students from any year group. It is a wonderful way to explore problem solving and team work.

I am asking for interested students to register their interest with me in the Maths Staffroom. We will begin training during lunchtimes in Term 2, and organising the teams. In term 3 the challenges will be released. It requires a large time commitment from the students during the intense 6 weeks of devising a solution, but is always a fun time. It is also important that the student is available on Sunday 1st September for the competition.

Further details, including a trailer video, can be found at the NSW Tournament of Minds website, or contact Mrs Booth.

Senior Food Technology and Hospitality students tour of The Star and Sydney Fish Markets.

Last week senior Food technology and Hospitality students went on a behind the scenes tour of The Star and visited the Sydney Fish Markets.

The Star, which employs approximately 5,000 people, is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The students were taken on a tour of the staff canteen, cool rooms and storage areas, were given a demonstration of the automated staff laundry in operation, walked through huge commercial kitchens and we were given talks by Head Chefs. They were also lucky to visit the chocolate room!

After the tour, the students had lunch at The Harvest, and tried to sample all of the foods at the buffet. Most of them tried the chocolate fountain at least once.

From The Star, they caught the light rail around to the Sydney Fish Markets. The students were amazed at the size of the crabs and lobsters, and their prices! After wandering through and looking at the range of seafood, they then caught the light rail back to Central and home.

The students and teachers had a fantastic day and learnt a lot about the Australian Food Industry and the Hospitality industry. Mrs Alcorn and Mrs Butfield would like to congratulate the students on their excellent behaviour throughout the excursion.

EXPEDITION TO NEPAL 2020

Evening Info Session @ Bomaderry HS on 10/04/19 from 4:00pm – 5:15pm

The Nowra Community is excited to announce the launch of the Antipodeans Expedition to Nepal departing in September 2020! Open to students currently in Years 9 and 10, this once in a lifetime experience gives your child the opportunity to embrace the world beyond the classroom whilst developing skills of leadership, resilience and mindfulness. All costs associated with the trip are fundraised by the students.

Nepal Expedition Highlights

• Contribute to a sustainable, hands-on community service project aligned with UN Global Goals.

• Take a photo of a lifetime as you trek through the stunning Himalayas!

• Tuck into some traditional Nepali dumplings as you explore the local markets of Kathmandu.

• Experience meaningful cultural immersion and a better understanding of the world around us.

What do students gain?

An Antipodeans Expedition is first and foremost ‘student-led’. Facilitated by a highly qualified Antipodeans Leader, students are encouraged to work together to manage the team budget, accommodation, transport and meals throughout their journey. This drives students to make real-world decisions, take responsibility for their actions; and in the process, develop vital life skills. Guided by an expert support team and leader, students gain a true appreciation of their host country, learn to work together as a team, become ‘global citizens’ and of course, have the time of their young lives!

How do I find out more?

For parents/carers and students who would like to find out more about this exciting opportunity in our local community, please attend the information session being held in the A Block Common Room at Bomaderry High School on Wednesday 10th April from 4:00pm – 5:15pm.

If you cannot attend but would like further information please speak to your careers advisor.
