Principal's Report

I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone for the upcoming 2019 school year at Bomaderry High School. Firstly, the holiday period saw a great deal of work taking place in an attempt to repair the significant damage from the heavy rains at the end of 2018. Classrooms are now operational however there will continue to be ongoing work to ensure the school is back in full working order. I would like to thank Lewis Rutledge, our outstanding General Assistant, who on top of his normal duties, coordinated the many tradespeople required to complete this work.

At the end of 2018 we officially recognised the retirements of three wonderful, dedicated and hardworking teachers. Mrs Cheryl Lett, Mr Ray Ford and Mrs Lorelli Lett all bid the school farewell and we wish them all the very best in the next chapter of their lives. Mrs Lorelli Lett is not lost to Bomaderry High School as she will continue on in her role as HSC Presiding Officer, overseeing the coordination and supervision of HSC examinations.

As is often the case at this time of year, there have been a number of staff changes, along with a number of new appointments. Ms Pastor has accepted a position at Warilla Office as a Learning and Wellbeing Officer for 2019. Her Careers teaching position will be taken by Ms McCarthy. Mr Arthur (PDHPE) is on leave and is replaced by Mr Sablowski. Mr Reminis joins the Science faculty. Ms Mundey and Mr Green will be teaching at our tutorial centre. Mr McElhinney is in HSIE along with Miss Mills who is relieving for Mrs Rizutto for the beginning of Term 1. Ms Halliday will be teaching a number of junior classes whilst Mr Whitnell will be replacing Mr Ford whilst we wait on a staffing appointment, and Mr Mustapic joins our amazing team of School Learning and Support Officers.

Ms Ozturk returns in English and we thank Mrs Baxter for her dedicated approach to ensure students in her classes always experience quality learning opportunities. Ms Bochenik, Ms Cairns and Mr Host have been appointed to our three additional support classes along Ms Stevens who replaces Mrs Lett. Ms McMullen has been appointed to a permanent teaching position at the Shoalhaven Tutorial Centre whilst Mrs Eastgate has been appointed on a permanent basis to our HSIE faculty. Congratulations and welcome to all our new staff. I’m sure you’ll all love working at Bomaderry High School as much as I do!

Deputys' Report

The year has certainly started off in a very busy manner with a number of school programs already up and running. The school swimming carnival was held in Week 2 and Year 7, Year 10 and competitors had a fantastic day at the pool. The PE staff, who can be congratulated for their wonderful organisation of this event, commended in particular our new Year 7 group on their behaviour and enthusiasm during the day. Congratulations to Year 7 on demonstrating already what a great year they are.

There are so many exciting things happening this year at Bomaderry High School. Ms. Myers-Brown, the CAPA faculty and a number of other staff are producing a, yet to be named, musical which will be performed in Term 4. Ms. Parsons is collaborating with parents, students and staff to ensure that our trip to Korea in late Term 3 is an experience of a lifetime for the students who are attending, and Ms. Mehic has a wide variety of wellbeing programs designed to support our students as they navigate their way through the school year.

As well as that, our Literacy and Numeracy team are gearing up to run Best Start Year 7, a state wide testing program that will provide key information to teaching staff about literacy and numeracy capabilities in our Year 7 students. This data, along with other data collected from their start at high school and their years in primary school, will inform how we can best meet their needs in developing and improving literacy and numeracy skills in individual students.

Our school attendance team has also been working very hard to ensure that students are regularly attending school as high attendance is directly related to success at school and in life. Please see the attendance report and helpful fact sheets from the NSW Department of Education which provide information on how to support your child in regularly attending school.
