PDHPE Report

It has been a productive first Semester for the PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education) Faculty in 2019. A large number of students have taken up many opportunities provided to them at Bomaderry High School and many have achieved terrific results for themselves as individuals and for our School. In this report we will provide an update on some of the topics and areas being covered by our PDHPE students during Semester One 2019.

This year sees a transition for the PDHPE syllabus delivered to our students with Year 7 and 9 having units delivered from the New Syllabus PDHPE and Year 8 and 10 remaining with units from the previous syllabus. In 2020, Year 8 and 10 will transition to the New Year 7-10 PDHPE Syllabus. This will mean that that at the start of next year all students Years 7-10 will be delivered units of work from the New Year 7-10 PDHPE Syllabus.

Year 7 have been working through units developed from the New Year 7-10 PDHPE Syllabus. Topics have included Change and Challenge, Bouncing Forward, Seriously Skilful, Personal Best and Have a Ball. Year 7 have also participated in their Sport modules each Monday afternoon including activities such as Water Safety and Swimming, Games and most recently an AFL program.

Year 8 are currently completing a Research Assessment Task based on their Semester One theory PDHPE unit focusing on selected health topics and the skills and knowledge needed to effectively access health information and services. This builds on the great skill displayed by many Year 8 students during their practical lessons for PDHPE and the Gymnastics routines completed during Term One. Year 8 at Bomaderry High School are also offered the Modern Day Athlete Elective and it has been terrific to see how popular this course has been and the enthusiasm and skill on display from the students in the class.

Year 9 have been working through units based on the New Year 7-10 PDHPE Syllabus with the focus for Semester One being Choices and Consequences, Balancing Act and Raising the Bar. A highlight has been our Year 9 students working in groups to design and present their own Fitness Activity Plan in Term One. In this task students were asked to review their fitness levels, design a piece of fitness equipment (made from everyday products) and then complement this with the design of fitness activities that could be undertaken to improve their fitness using the equipment. The images show some samples of part of the finished product for one of our Year 9 groups.

Many students from the Year 9 and 10 PASS Elective classes have been terrific volunteers, assisting our partner Primary Schools with sporting games and events such as the Knockout Football and Soccer Matches, School carnivals and Gala Days. It is always fantastic to see our students readily offer their time and expertise in these situations and use their leadership skills to contribute toward these events running so successfully. The photos show our students doing a great job while assisting at a recent AFL K-2 Skills Day.

Year 10 are busily working through the requirements for Stage 5 PDHPE, with our students recently completing a presentation to their class on a selected Health Topic. In the practical areas of the subject students have completed the first stage of their Games Assessment and are currently beginning work on a group Gymnastics Routine. These assessments are important as they will be used to develop each student’s RoSA grade for PDHPE. It has been great to see the number of students actively working to improve and perform at their best in each of these tasks.

Our Year 11 PDHPE and SLR students are working through the Preliminary content for their respective courses. It was outstanding to see the planning, teamwork and initiative during the three day Outdoor Recreation Camp at Cataract Scout Camp during Term One. The camp provided students with the opportunity to put into practice many of the theory skills they were learning during the Outdoor Recreation module via activities such as Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Caving, High Ropes and Team Challenges. The weather was on our side for most of the trip however a number of storms certainly challenged the planning and resilience of our students. The photos show our Year 11 students pushing their comfort zone in a number of the camp activities.

Year 12 SLR have recently completed their Aquatics Unit and are beginning a topic where they will be visiting the Gym. Our students are very fortunate to have such terrific access to these facilities in Bomaderry to participate in this learning. Our Year 12 PDHPE students are working steadily toward the Trial HSC period next term. The two PDHPE Year 12 classes have recently benefited from a fantastic presentation from ASADA relating to the dangers and issues regarding Performance Enhancing Drugs which is part of the Improving Performance Option studied by our students. Later this term our Year 12 PDHPE students will travel to Sydney to visit the Museum of Human Disease at the UNSW. This visit will complement the Core study of Health Priorities in Australia for our Year 12 PDHPE students.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the students who are currently giving their best effort and looking to improve within our subject area. These students set high expectations for themselves and are consistently positive and enthusiastic about their learning across all areas of PDHPE. The PDHPE faculty is looking forward to working with our students for the remainder of the year and seeing their progress and achievements develop throughout 2019.

Rugby League Gala Day

On Thursday the 23rd of May the U14's and U16's boys Rugby League teams competed in a gala day at Bomaderry Sporting Complex. The pool rounds saw us draw our familiar rivals Kiama High School as well as the strong St John the Evangelist Catholic High School.

In the U14's competition we made a positive start in our first game against KHS but their skill and experience shone through as they ran in 4 unanswered tries to win 20-0. We showed we were more than capable of matching it with the Kiama team in patches but turned over to much football to be competitive.

In our second match against St John's we started well with some hard running from Jacob F, Riley S and some strong defence from Jye W. We proved to strong for our cross town rivals running in three tries to one, winning 12-6. Unfortunately with one win and one loss we did not progress to the Grand Final.

In the U16's competition the boys started on fire with a hard fought 6-4 win over KHS who are generally the bench mark in Rugby League for our zone. In their second game the boys came up against a talented St John's team who were to strong, winning 10-0. It meant that all teams in our pool finished with one win and a draw but St John's went through to the Grand Final with a superior for and against.

The gala day brought to the end the Rugby League zone gala day's for the year. All teams represented the school in an exceptional manner and their performances did the school proud.
