The Boise Base held our Submarine Service birthday celebration on April 10th. We had a fun evening, meeting some new submariners and sharing stories and plans for attending the USS Idaho commissioning. Brian (Longest qualified) and Caleb (most recently qualified) had the cake cutting honors using Brian's French model 1831 artillery sword. Thanks to all who attended.
Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day
We had beautiful weather for the Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day along with a good crowd. Shipmates Frank, Doug, Dave and Gary were joined by Tom from the USS Idaho commissioning committee. We had some great conversations with a lot of different people and made good contacts with other veteran organizations. This was a great event to start the year of with.
January Monthly Meeting
We had a great turnout for our first meeting of the year. We welcomed two new members and enjoyed some introductions and stories. We also talked about our upcoming events. The first big one will be the submarine birthday party on April 11th, location and time to be determined by our committee. After our meeting some of us enjoyed a lunch at Sockeye Brewing.
New storage cover for the Boise Model
Brian and Gary used some surplus camo net spreaders to build a framework to hold a tarp off the model and protect it from the weather. They were built in three section to make it easier to remove them when we need the boat for an event. Hopefully this will help keep the boat looking good and ready for a deployment or spec op.
Idaho Veterans Parade 2025
The USSVI Boise Base teamed up with the USS Idaho commissioning committee to participate in the Treasure Velley Stand Down being held at the Idaho Ford Center. There were over 60 different organizations present offing a wide variety of service and ways to connect. In addition there was food, clothing , medical services and even haircuts available. Almost 800 veterans took advantage of the stand down. We enjoyed visiting with many of those and especially some submariners we had never met before. Hopefully we will see them at future meetings and events. Thanks to all who helped out.
Idaho Women Veterans Memorial
The former COB and current FTC, along with their wives, came to Idaho for the dedication of the Idaho Women Veterans Memorial. They came on their own time, having been moved by their earlier April crew visit. The dedication ceremony was exceptional and well attended. The statue can be viewed at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.
USS Boise Crew Visit
Six members of the crew from the USS Boise (SSN-764) visited Boise during the last week of August. During their visit they saw the blue turf, spoke at schools and met with dignitaries. They also participated in the golf scramble and Spirit of Boise Balloon Festival. On Saturday they received balloon rides, including on one balloon piloted by our shipmate Brian Reich.
Tour of Honor
The Boise Base teamed up with the USS Idaho Commissioning Committee to join the Tour of Honor for their ride to the new Horseshoe Bend Memorial Park. We enjoyed talking with some submariners who stopped when they saw the USS Boise model. We also had a great time talking with the riders who made the trip.
4th of July Parade Caldwell, Id
The Boise Base teamed up with the Treasure Valley Blue Star Mothers for the 4th of July parade in Caldwell. The morning started with some rain, but it cleared before the parade started, so I guess you can say that "no one rained on our parade." Between the TVBSM and our shipmates we had nine people turn out to help. The crowd was great, and we had a lot of fun. Caldwell had a full day of events with the parade just being the first one of many.
BVAMC Veterans Appreciation Fair
The Boise Base teamed up with the USS Idaho Commissioning Committee to represent submarines at the Boise VA Medical Center Veterans Appreciation Fair. We had a great time an talked with a lot of different people, including some new-to-us submariners
Boise Base BBQ 2025 at Settlers Park
Here are some photos from our 2025 Boise Base BBQ. We had a nice turnout. The weather was a little cool, but we survived. Vice-Commander Tim manned the grill while we all swapped sea stories and visited.
Memorial Day Ceremony at Idaho state Veterans Cemetery 2025
The USSVI Boise Base was selected to have the honor of carrying the United States Navy wreath at the Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony held at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. This annual ceremony fits perfectly into the USSVI creed and commitment to remember those submarine sailors who remain on eternal patrol.
The weather this year was beautiful, the speakers eloquent and respectful and the ceremony itself solemn and moving.
We would like to thank everyone who helped make this an awesome event, these volunteers helped get people in and out and ensured everyone had what they needed.
It's a great example of how Idahoans work together.
We joined the USS Idaho Commissioning Committee for Parade America in Nampa. Even with a little rain there was a great turnout and time had by all.
Tim was sworn in as our new vice-commander. His wife and daughters were able to attend and help us celebrate. Tim is a great addition to our wardroom and a fantastic resource for the base. BZ Tim!
