Incubation Design Challenges (IDCs) are interdisciplinary STEM learning experiences where students use design thinking, learner-centered teaching, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to address real-world food systems challenges related to food security, safety, and sustainability.

The Community Needs Assessment & Problem Posing mini-unit grounds students in real-world agricultural and environmental inquiry by positioning them as active researchers. Using local data mining, survey fieldwork, and ecological mapping, high schoolers evaluate local food accessibility in their own neighborhood to calculate a custom Food Desert Index (FDI). This process uncovers systemic food security challenges and establishes a clear, data-driven rationale for engineered local solutions.
The Smart Microgreens curriculum serves as a direct, hands-on example of how students apply STEM and physical computing to solve the specific community challenges identified in Unit 1. Using BBC micro:bit microprocessors, environmental sensors, and automated actuators, students design, program, and scale an IoT-enabled indoor growing system. This project demonstrates how data-driven, controlled-environment agriculture can bypass local supply chain and transit barriers to produce fresh, high-density nutrition year-round.
