The Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Team is a specialized unit within Botetourt County Fire & EMS – Special Operations, providing aerial support to enhance emergency response, situational awareness, and operational efficiency. All team members are FAA Part 107 certified and trained in public safety drone operations, ensuring safe, legal, and effective use of unmanned aircraft during a wide range of missions.
Key responsibilities of the UAS Team include:
Assisting with search and rescue operations using aerial and thermal imaging
Providing real-time situational awareness during natural disasters, fires, and large-scale incidents
Conducting damage assessments and mapping of impacted areas
Supporting law enforcement with overwatch and evidence documentation
Aiding in pre-incident planning, event monitoring, and training exercises
The UAS Team is a vital force multiplier, enabling rapid aerial intelligence gathering to support decision-makers and improve responder safety. Working in close coordination with local, regional, and state partners, the team ensures that Botetourt County remains ready to respond from above when every second counts.
