The Swiftwater component of the Botetourt County Special Operations Team specializes in water rescue operations involving rapidly moving or potentially hazardous water conditions. This includes rivers, creeks, flood zones, and other swiftwater environments. The team is trained and equipped to conduct rescues of individuals who are stranded, swept away, or otherwise in danger due to high water events, flash flooding, or water-related accidents.
Their responsibilities include:
Performing rescues from moving water using boats, ropes, and specialized flotation and technical gear.
Conducting searches along riverbanks, creeks, and flood zones for missing or endangered individuals.
Assisting with evacuations during flooding events and supporting recovery operations after water-related disasters.
Providing support to mutual aid partners and participating in regional or statewide water rescue deployments.
Team members undergo rigorous training to meet NFPA and Virginia standards for swiftwater rescue and regularly train in live water conditions to maintain proficiency. The Swiftwater team works closely with local fire departments, emergency management, and law enforcement to ensure a coordinated and effective response during water emergencies.
