Marksmanship is where we teach cadets about three position air rifle shooting with special emphasis placed on range safety. Additionally, we teach cadets how to deal with the mental stresses of competition sport shooting, discipline, patience, nutrition, physical wellness and fitness. Prior to placing any cadet on the firing range, they must attend a safety class, pass a safety exam with a score of 100% and sign a cadet safety agreement. The firing range is located in the JROTC building; here we train our cadets the basic fundamentals of marksmanship and how to shoot in all three positions required for air rifle competitions (Prone, Standing, Kneeling). The marksmanship team has been extremely successful winning the district championships the past two years in a row and placing 2nd in the state competition in 2017. The team also won the Jr. Olympic Championships in 2017 with the highest score in our school's history. In 2017, six members of the marksmanship team qualified for the National Championships which were held in Port Clinton, Ohio. College scholarships can be earned in marksmanship if a cadet possesses the skills required to compete at the collegiate level. Marksmanship is the only extra-curricular in JROTC where students can earn college scholarships if they are good enough. Since the marksmanship programs inception, three of our cadets have earned college scholarships or were awarded money to help them pay for school. The marksmanship team is a very competitive team and is one of the most demanding teams because the season starts in September and normally ends in July. It takes a lot of commitment, not all students will be selected for the team because the competition is fierce. We normally select 3-5 students each year from the JROTC student population to join the team. It normally takes 2-3 years to train students to reach level they need to achieve before they can compete at the high levels that our team expects.
