The Boca Ciega High School

Boca Ciega High School is in constant pursuit of expanding its scope of educational excellence. At BCHS our goal is for all students to achieve high standards and have a clear direction once they graduate. In the Spring of 1987 The United States Army Cadet Command aggred to establish the Boca Ciega Army JROTC program with the begining of School year 1988-89.

The JROTC Program

"The Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a program offered to high schools that teaches students character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, and diversity. It is a cooperative effort between the Army and the high schools to produce successful students and citizens, while fostering in each school a more constructive and disciplined learning environment. JROTC is a successful program, making substantial contributions to students, schools, and communities which benefit greatly from its presence. The benefits of JROTC are reflected in metrics impacting all schools in the U.S."

The Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a Federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools and also in some middle schools across the United States and United States military bases across the world. The program was originally created as part of the National Defense Act of 1916 and later expanded under the 1964 ROTC Vitalization Act.

JROTC is a Leadership and Character Development program.

"The curriculum is facilitated and taught by retired Army personnel. Qualified retired Army personnel are employed by the schools to teach the JROTC curriculum. JROTC teacher qualifications are based on military experience, maturity, stability, and leadership acquired over 20 years of service to our nation. To safeguard the viability of the JROTC program, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Education endorse the proposition that states recognize that JROTC instructors are certified to teach JROTC and the array of subject areas embedded (e.g., Physical Education, Health/Wellness, Civics, etc.)"

At BCHS we expect all students to challenge themselves academically by selecting rigorous courses and developing their leadership and social character by getting actively involved in JROTC and other extracurricular activities at school. Instruction focuses on student centered learning in a structured environment. We try to engage students in their creativity and can lead to industry certification in a high needs workforce field. . Through participation cadets are able to get a deeper understanding of the subjects and how they may apply what they have learned to real world situations. We teach our students that they must look out for their future and take advantage of all opportunities that will take them where they want to go in life.

The JROTC curriculum includes a broad spectrum of subjects, including:
