FBI Seizes Hacker Forum
See the InfoPackets article by John Lister on May 31, 2024 at 02:05 pm EDT.
FBI Takes Over BreachForums
The FBI has taken control of a forum used for selling stolen data. This is the second time BreachForums has been taken down this year, which shows how it may be an endless task.
Such forums are a vital incentive for hackers to steal data in the first place. The forums make it easier to find buyers for the stolen data, rather than the hackers having to figure out their tactics for exploiting the stolen information. BreachForums was also an essential marketplace for selling malware for successful hacking attacks.
High-profile data offered for sale on the site in recent months included personal information on Dell customers and, embarrassingly, data from Europol, an alliance of European police forces. (Source: arstechnica.com)
International Cooperation
Unusually, the site was available on the World Wide Web and accessible by any web browser. Many such sites are only available on the "dark web," which requires special browsing software that makes it harder to track who has accessed and run the site.
The FBI has now worked with the Department of Justice and international agencies to seize site control. They made a similar move last year, arresting the site's administrator. However, it reopened under a new administrator using three new domain addresses.
Telegram Channel Seized
This seizure is more effective as officials suggest they don't merely control the domain names but have access to the database that powered the site. That means they could have some details of the site's users who have potentially broken laws.
They've also taken control of the site's official channel on Telegram, along with that of an administrator. Telegram is an encrypted messaging tool created by two Russian men who later left the country, citing political oppression. The user base includes people with many different reasons for wishing to communicate privately. (Source: techcrunch.com)
What's Your Opinion?
Are such law enforcement operations worthwhile? Will they act as a deterrent, or is this just whack-a-mole? Should people be allowed to discuss criminal hacking techniques online?
Comments — Whack-a-mole is not always futile — Submitted by lightft_3936 on Fri, 31/05/2024 — 15:58.
Keeping people who do not respect the rights of others off the streets is valuable. There will ALWAYS be more people who want to fill the spot of the guy just taken down, but they are down for now. When they return, the world may have moved on, and their skills and connections may not be as valuable as before. They lose, while society gains from having them off the street and learning how they were taken down. Human nature is such that we will always have good and evil, and so long as we strive to have something a majority of people call "the common good" that we want to benefit from, there will be a need to control those with lower standards.

Suspected foul play topples Optus telco tower

Suspected foul play topples Optus telco tower.
5G Tower
A 4G mobile Optus tower in Mullumbimby in Northern New South Wales was toppled in what authorities suspect was a "deliberate act of vandalism" two weeks ago.
Tweed-Byron Police District Inspector Matt Woods told ABC News, which first reported the incident, that vandals used power tools to fell the tower.
Woods said the bolts had been removed by a ratchet gun or something similar.
The tower became unstable. The police said a weather event toppled the structure, destroying it.
"It's more than vandalism; it's a reckless and dangerous act to take out towers," he told ABC News.
The toppled tower has left residents with connection issues and without access to mobile networks.
Sky News reported that telco provider Optus has begun working to assess and restore connectivity in the affected areas.
This act of vandalism is not an isolated incident. In March 2022, Telstra's central tower in the town's CBD also caught fire, disrupting connections in the weeks following the region's devastating flood event.
Reports alleged that the tower was set alight as a form of protest against 5G technology, which is a part of a conspiracy theory.
According to Sky News, some people believe that the COVID-19 vaccine was used to place microchips in the population, and 5G towers have been used to control the microchips.
The protest claimed that radio waves emitted by the towers spread COVID-19 and caused radiation and health problems.
Another bizarre theory was that the towers were being used for public surveillance or as a weapon system.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

Gadigal Station Explained and Update — Includes Over Station Developments — Sydney Metro
See the 12m0s YouTube video by Paul from Transport Vlog, 25 Jan 2024.
In this video, I examine the new Gadigal Sydney Metro station, discuss its design, and provide an update on its current appearance.
I start with the Gadigal South entrance on Bathurst Street, including the location of the Opal gates, escalators and lifts. I then cover the Indi Sydney integrated development that is being built above.
The Gadigal North entrance is on Park Street. Here, you'll see glimpses of the lifts and escalators, along with a bright yellow wall.
I then use Sydney Metro photos and videos to give you a guided tour of Gadigal Station. It's the next best thing to being there, and you don't need to wear PPE!
I then cover the Parkline Place integrated commercial development that is being built above and reveal what used to be there before construction work started.
Ed:
Part of the new train map shows the position of the new metro station, Gadigal (named after the indigenous custodians of the Sydney area). It was previously known as the Pitt Street station.
Sydney Rail Map
When it opens in a few months time, two of the entrances will be near our Club's meeting place at 280 Pitt Street. They will be on Pitt street, south of our meeting place, and on nearby Bathurst Street between Pitt and Castlereagh Streets.
The station interiors are stunning, with commercial traders like Restaurants and Coffee shops.
Two of the Gadigal Entrances
Here, you can see two entrances to Gadigal Station in the buildings, which have vertical pink stonework surrounding the heritage-listed Edinburgh Castle Hotel.
