Kateri Thunder, Ph.D. is an educator, researcher, author, and coach who collaborates with learners and educators from school divisions around the world to translate research into practice. Kateri has served as an inclusive, early childhood educator, an Upward Bound educator, a mathematics specialist, an assistant professor of mathematics education at James Madison University, and Site Director for the Central Virginia Writing Project. Kateri researches, writes, and presents on equity and access in education and the intersection of literacy and mathematics for teaching and learning. She has partnered with thousands of educators to catalyze change in their classrooms and schools. Kateri is a best-selling author, along with John Hattie, John Almarode, Doug Fisher, and Nancy Frey, for Corwin’s Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom Series, The Success Criteria Playbook, and The Mathematics Playbook.
As the new school year gets underway with the full implementation of the 2023 standards, the state has let us know that resources are being updated. The most recent update to the Instructional Guides (August, 2024) includes the addition of the K-5 Computer Science standards in the Concepts and Connections section and also content updates. New testing blueprints have also been released for both the SOLs and Growth Assessments.
Virginia Department of Education
The Virginia Department of Education, in conjunction with mathematics leaders and teachers, are in the process of developing resources to support educators with the instruction of the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning. These resources are intended to support mathematics instruction and to inform the development and review of Highly Qualified Instructional Materials (HQIM).
The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning were approved by the Virginia Board of Education on August 31, 2023. The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning represent "best in class" standards and comprise the mathematics content that teachers in Virginia are expected to teach and students are expected to learn. The 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning will be fully implemented during the 2024-2025 school year.
These excellent resources, developed by Virginia teachers and mathematics leaders, are designed to help teachers identify students with unfinished learning and assist in planning instruction to fill potential gaps “just in time.” As new content is introduced throughout the school year, teachers can use these Quick Checks to identify and diagnose unfinished learning at grade level and/or to assess understanding of prerequisite knowledge that may be needed to access grade level content.
The resources include three training webinars that support the use of the resources. Each is approximately 45 minutes long, and targets educators in bands K-3; 4-6; and 7-Alg.
Mathematics Instructional Plans (MIPs) help teachers align instruction with the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) by providing examples of how the knowledge, skills and processes found in the SOL and curriculum framework can be presented to students in the classroom.
Rich mathematical tasks engage students in sense-making through deeper learning that require high levels of thinking, reasoning, and problem solving. These resources provide support in implementing the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning, and include grade band webinars to assist teachers in implementing rich tasks in both their virtual classrooms and their in-school classrooms. Each webinar is approximately 60 minutes in duration.
This website is the result of a summer project that partnered VDOE and George Mason University. The site provides routines, tasks and games for all the bridging standards K-8 as well as a plethora of other amazing resources.
