Since 2017, our team has been actively involved in the OpenAirInterface (OAI) open-source project from EURECOM (a French engineering school and research center in communication systems). Based on OAI software, we developed the world's first open-source NB-IoT base station. In 2019, we also co-founded the "Joint NTUST-EURECOM Open5G Lab" with EURECOM to develop 5G open-source base station software.
Starting in 2021, our team further engaged in the "O-RAN Software Community (OSC)," an open-source software project established by the O-RAN ALLIANCE in collaboration with the Linux Foundation. We are actively participating in the software development of the OSC community's O-DU LOW and O-DU HIGH, as well as the integration work for the SMO (Service Management and Orchestration) module and the RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller).
The O-RAN Software Community currently has three Community Labs worldwide that provide integration testing for various sub-projects. These include the OSC Asia Pacific Lab, established in Taiwan by our team and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), and the US East and US West labs established by AT&T and China Mobile. The OSC Asia Pacific Lab is currently responsible for the integration work of OSC open-source software, and our team's PhD student, Fransiscus Bimo, a long-term contributor to the OSC community, was elected as the Project Team Lead (PTL) for the OSC INT (Integration and Testing) Project in 2024.
