Policies Procedures and Programming

Family File - Prior to the first day of school parents are required to log into their school Canvas account and complete the online Family File for their children.

PE Uniforms - Students are required to change into exercise clothing during physical education class.  Parents can purchase a PE Uniform for their child at the Back to School Bash, online or students may purchase one during their PE class when they return to school.  Students have the option of may bring in appropriate exercise clothing consisting of dark colored bottoms and a light colored shirt.

Car Rider Information - In order to help with traffic flow and safety, please drop your child off on the Centennial High School side of the building.  Please do not block the bus lanes during drop off or pick up times.  Also, when picking up your child after school, please pull your car all the way past the school in order to prevent traffic from backing up onto Centennial Lane.

Early Dismissal - Please remember to send an email to BMMSabsence@hcpss.org in the morning on days when he/she will be picked up early from school.  The goal of this is to eliminate classroom interruption and also allows for student to leave class on their own, pack up and be ready in the front office for pick up.  The student can also bring note to Mrs. Wagner during Homeroom to receive an early dismissal pass.  Please note that parents need to sign students out in the front office and bring identification in to school.   Sending an email ahead of time is extremely helpful as students can be outside, in a different classroom, participating in an activity, etc. and pick up can be delayed as we try to locate the student.

Late Arrivals - Students should enter school at 8:30 AM so they can arrive to First Period by 8:40AM.  If students are not in First Period by 8:40 AM they must sign in at the front office.  If a student has three tardies in a quarter they are referred to their School Counselor, at the 4th tardy they are assigned a detention by an administrator. If a student tardies have become excessive they will automatically be referred to the Administrator when coming in late.   A student must be accompanied by a parent or the child must have a note when coming in to school late  even if the reason is unexcused. A note or parent is needed at all times.

Visiting the school:

Vaccination Requirements - The Howard County Health Department requires that all students be immunized against MCV (meningitis) and tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, acellular Pertussis) upon entering 7th grade.  A record of these immunizations must be provided to the health room prior to starting school.

Dropping off forgotten items - Parents dropping off forgotten items should bring them to the main office.  Parents will be asked to place the item on the table in the main office and sign the form on the table.  Students will be called to the main office at 11:23 a.m., before our first lunch, to pick up their items.

Students receiving permission from a teacher may come to the main office to check for items their parents may have dropped off.

Lost and Found  - BMMS's lost and found is located in the cafeteria by the windows.  Students may search during lunch or after school to claim lost items.  When the lost and found is overflowing and storage is limited within the school; all unclaimed items are donated.

Online Payments - Burleigh Manor Middle School will be accepting online payments for activities through out the year in an effort to help simplify how parents pay for school related activities.  The online payment system is through Online School Payments, Inc. (OSP).  When visiting the webpage, select Burleigh Manor Middle School and your student's activity or should appear on the menu.  Of note there is a service fee associated with payment on the OSP.

Health Education - Middle School Health Education includes a meaningful unit in the curriculum entitled, Sexual Health. Due to the sensitive nature of this instruction, as directed by Maryland State Regulations (COMAR 13A.04.18.01), “students may be excused from this unit of the program upon a written request from their parents/guardians”. BMMS holds an evening meeting for parents who are interested in learning more about what their child will be learning.  The purpose of this meeting is to assist parents in making a decision about their child’s participation in this unit.

Bobcat Bucks - Burleigh Manor Middle School has a positive reward system where teachers distribute bobcat bucks to students who they deem worth based on their in school action.  These Bobcat Bucks can be saved and spent at the end of the quarter celebrations (fall fling, FFF (Feburary Fun Friday), spring fling).  Bobcat Bucks are a part of the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports PBIS of HCPSS.

Medications in school  - Medication information, including forms for medication administered at school, can be found at https://www.hcpss.org/health/medications/

Students may not bring any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to school themselves; please ensure a parent or guardian brings medication to our health room.
