I am currently learning the basics of Commutative Algebra (via Eisenbud's Commutative Algebra with a View Towards Algebraic Geometry) with the guidance of Daniel Erman. 

As an undergraduate, I worked with Karl Schwede (and others) at the University of Utah on the package FastLinAlg for Macaulay2.  For more information on this project, see the paper below (published in the Journal of Software for Algebra and Geometry in 2023):
