We are an ASOC team made up of students who care about the sea, our territory, and the future of the Adriatic. We came together with a shared curiosity and a strong desire to understand how public projects can really make a difference for the environment and for local communities.
Working as a team, we learn by doing: we analyze data, ask questions, meet experts, and go into the field. Through our civic monitoring of the MAPA – Marine Adriatic Parks project, we focus on the role of ARPA Molise and on the Foce Trigno Marine Protected Area.
The GFCM has established a new Fisheries Restricted Area in the Strait of Otranto that prohibits trawling in the most sensitive areas of the southern Adriatic. The measure stems from scientific analyses that have identified seabeds with vulnerable habitats, including deep ecosystems that are home to slow-growing and easily damaged species, such as the coral Isidella elongata. The aim is to reduce the impact of fishing activities on the bodies of the fund and to foster the recovery of exploited fish populations. The measure represents an operational step in strengthening the protection of Adriatic marine ecosystems and contributes to international conservation commitments in the Mediterranean.
Croatia has begun planning its Exclusive Economic Zone in the Adriatic through a new Space Plan.
The project establishes where and how economic activities can be carried out, while also indicating areas to be preserved to avoid damage to sensitive marine ecosystems.
The proposal is being consulted and aims to make sea use more orderly and sustainable in the future.
The SeaInsights project, developed by Italian and Slovenian researchers, uses environmental DNA (eDNA) to non-invasively monitor biodiversity in the northern Adriatic Sea.
By analyzing the genetic material dissolved in the water, it is possible to identify marine species without capture or direct observation.
These data will serve to better understand the health status of ecosystems and support future decisions on the protection and sustainable management of the Adriatic.
"BlueWaves" is a symbolic name for a civil awareness initiative that embraces the beauty and vitality of the sea, with a particular focus on the Adriatic. Blue, the color of the sea, evokes both the serenity and the majesty of a marine environment essential to our future. The waves, which with their continuous movement represent change and life, are the beating heart of a healthy and dynamic ecosystem.
"BlueWaves" aims to be the bridge between the two Adriatic coasts, Italy and Croatia, uniting communities through awareness and civic action. It expresses the principle that Italy and Croatia are two different nations, but share the same sea and the same responsibilities. Remember the need to cooperate to defend the Adriatic Sea, because everything that happens on one coast has consequences on the other. It therefore suggests unity, cooperation and shared commitment to preserve the sea as a common wealth.
