Home Fire Campaign (HFC) is a national initiative aimed at reducing home fire-related deaths and injuries. Home fires claim more lives in the U.S. each year than all other disasters combined. The campaign’s mission is to make homes safer through fire prevention, preparedness, and response education.
The program is 100% FREE and no socioeconomic information is asked. Here’s how the campaign works:
Smoke Alarm Installation: Red Cross volunteers and partners provide free smoke alarm installations. We provide alarms and ensure they are properly placed in homes – we install as many alarms as needed. We also provide smoke alarms for the hard of hearing and deaf. These alarms are called “Bed Shakers”. Due to some individuals not being able to hear a smoke alarm, bed shakers are installed which not only shake but also have a bright flashing light to alert the resident. All of our alarms have a 10-year battery and a very easy-to-access test button (no more getting on chairs to push a little tiny button).
Home Fire Safety Education: Volunteers educate residents on fire safety, sharing tips like creating a fire escape plan, keeping combustible items away from heat sources, preparing a go-bag, and other very important information which will help the residents make their home safer.
