No racing experience necessary, just strong intermediate level skiing.
Dryland Practices
Begin early November at DHS North Gym
Dry land workouts (ski exercises, etc.) are mandatory and will be before school in the old gym on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 7-8 a.m. This continues through ski race season; since races are on Mondays, dry land trainings are only Wednesdays and Fridays starting in January. There is no dry land training during Thanksgiving or winter breaks. Please contact the coach if you are participating in a concurring high school sport like Cross-Country or Tennis.
Racers should wear comfortable athletic clothing as they will be doing various exercises to build core strength and flexibility.
M, W, F - 7 to 8 AM
Coaching/Transport expenses: $1500 is the expected donation for each racer. Donations can be paid on the Blue Devils Online Store. This money covers:
coaching
bus transportation (charter bus for 10-12 training days and 8-10 race days)
race fees
passes for other resorts where races are held.
Ski pass: Each ski racer needs to purchase a ski pass from Sugarbowl for training days. Information will be forthcoming regarding student racer discounts if available. Adults that want passes should purchase them directly from the resort -- there are no discounts through the team.
Equipment: The coaches will help racers determine what they need. Don't buy anything until the team's ski swap. If you don’t find what you need at the ski swap, check with Coach Jim about used equipment he might have access to.
Helmets -- The California Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation requires a FIS certification helmet (sticker on the back) that covers the ear and is a one-piece unit. Coach Jim places a group order of helmets, after he has fitted them during dry land.
Poles and pole guards -- These are often group-ordered. Racers get sized at dry land for poles. Emails will circulate about this when Coach Jim is ready to place orders.
Ski bags and boot bags -- Prices on Amazon are generally good esp. in the summer. Be sure ski bags are padded as they will be piled up together under the bus.
Optional team apparel. Racers may opt in to purchase team apparel which will be organized by volunteers.
Scholarships: Cost should not keep anyone from joining the ski team. If financial assistance is needed, contact Coach Jim Sanchirico james.sanchirico@gmail.com.
Bus Transportation
On weekend training and race days, the team will travel by bus from the Davis High track parking lot on Oak to the training or race site. On most days, racers should be at the bus by 5:45 a.m. Racers may need to arrive earlier, weather and location dependent. We load 15 minutes prior to departure and we leave promptly. (You will need to get a ride if you miss the bus.) The bus returns to the DHS parking lot some time in the evening, generally around 6 p.m. Racers are encouraged to text the person picking them up as they cross the Causeway. If a racer is not going to be on the bus for one or both directions, he or she must let transportation coordinator know in advance in the Team Snap app. Sign-ups will be posted before each trip up/down mountain -- watch for emails or use the link on the website home page. The bus does not wait, so be on time!
Communication
Initial communication will sent through FinalForms. Once the team is rostered, coaches and volunteers will communication with racers and their families via the Team Snap app.
Ski Swap: Sunday, November 8th
This is the team's only fundraiser! Every family must have the team member and 1 guardian volunteer (ex. 1 team member 2 volunteers, 2 team members 4 volunteers). A notice with a sign-up link will be circulated by email and will also be accessible through the "Ski Swap" tab on this website.
Weekend involves taking in donated and consigned items and setting up the facility on Saturday, November 7th. The swap is Sunday, November 8th. Volunteers are needed to help before, during (helping vendors and shoppers), and after (clean up).
This is an excellent resource for most gear you will need and the least expensive option!
Early Season Ski Camp: TBD (snow dependent)
Season
On the hill practice: Every Sat from Jan-beginning of Mar ( TBD). Dates subject to change based on weather and resort conditions.
Races on Mondays (TBD). Dates subject to change based on weather and resort conditions.
Missed school days for races are excused absences. The racer is responsible for letting teachers know in advance.

Early March is championship week (rotates between Shasta, Sugar Bowl, Mammoth and Northstar)
Approximately 10-15 skiers from Davis usually qualify. This will be discussed as we get closer to finals.
Western States High School Championships
12 boys and 12 girls from California will compete against racers from Southern Oregon, Northern Oregon, Nevada, Montana and Minnesota at Mammoth during the second week of March
