We created this group to share information about the role we can all play in protecting biodiversity by restoring native plant habitat. Because native plants are the basis of the food webs that support all species, we hope to encourage people with property of all sizes to incorporate native plants into their gardens to provide critically needed habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
Tuesday, March 5, 2019, 7:00-8:30 PM (doors open at 6:30).
Free Screening at the Blount County Public Library - Sharon Lawson Room. Discussion following the screening will be led by local native plant experts.
Did you know that our native pollinators and birds generally prefer native plants for nectar, pollen, seeds, and berries? Or that 96% of birds must have caterpillars and other insects to raise their young, and that native plants are needed to grow those essential insects?
Find out how you can play an enormous role in protecting biodiversity by including native plants in your garden. Join us for a free showing of Hometown Habitat - Stories of Bringing Nature Home. The narrative thread of this beautifully photographed documentary is provided by renowned entomologist Douglas Tallamy, Ph.D., whose research, books and lectures about the use of non-native plants in landscaping sound the alarm about habitat and species loss. Tallamy challenges the notion that humans are here and nature is someplace else, and encourages us to "garden as if life depended on it."
For two years, producer/director Catherine Zimmerman and her film crew traveled around the country to visit hometown habitat heroes and document their inspiring stories of community commitment to conservation landscaping. Zimmerman shares these success stories and works in progress that re-awaken and redefine our relationship with nature. The message will inspire you – all of us have the power to support habitat for wildlife and bring natural beauty to our patch of the Earth.
Come and learn about the many delights and rewards of nurturing nature!
