Every two seconds someone in our country needs blood to survive. More than 75 % of all Americans reaching age 72 will need blood in their lifetimes, and 97% will have a loved one who will need blood. Due to the many guidelines that exist involving blood donations, only 38% of the US population is eligible to give blood, and only about 3% of those who are eligible make yearly donations.
Blood donation and the need for life-saving blood is an issue that affects everyone, no matter their gender, race, or socioeconomic status. As we look to the future of blood donations, education is vital. It is important that we start educating young people about blood donations so that they will be prepared to roll up their sleeves when that are old enough.
When encouraging people to donate blood I often hear, "I'm afraid of needles." Truth be told, I have always been terrified of needles. Once I realized that the blood donation process was simple and relatively painless, I decided to face my fear because someday, I many need someone to do the same for me.
My name is Callie Farrell. Blood Connects Us All is an initiative that I formed in 2019 to not only elevate blood donations, but to educate others about giving blood and encourage them to participate in this life saving act. Since 2019, I have hosted and volunteered at numerous blood drives that have collected over 5,500 pints of blood, which is enough to save 16,500 lives. I have also developed a lesson for elementary students to teach them about the importance of blood donation. Follow me on social media to learn more about Blood Connects Us All.
