UNIVERSITAT JAUME I
The University Master's Degree in International Peace, Conflict and Development Studies welcomes international students who are interested in the academic domains of peace studies, conflict transformation, cooperation, education, and human rights, among other fields.
Yearly, students and professors work together to build an international and intercultural learning community that foments the peaceful conflict transformation through the acknowledgment, respect, and comprehension of the different cultures and life styles.
The cultural diversity of the master's members, who proceed from different regions of the world, and the small size of the groups favor collaborative work dynamics. These master's characteristics generate a close and pleasent environment.

The Master's Degree in Peace took a tour of Castellón during the time of the Second Republic in order to recover Peace Education initiatives that took place during this period, such as the creation of public schools, more teachers, coeducation, empowerment of women both in education and in society, the flourishing of culture, music and art, etc. We visited the Catholic cemetery, the civil cemetery with the memorial to the victims of Franco's repression, Ribalta Park (templet and monolith), Tetuan Square (former coat of arms of Castellón and air raid shelter) and the Town Hall Square.
Restoration of the Peace Tree October 16
Sofia Herrero Rico, as coordinator of the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace, participated in the event of the restoration of the Tree of Peace on 16 October, which has stood in a public square in La Vall d'Uixó since 2001 as a symbol to illuminate peace on our paths and in our daily lives. It is the work of the Vall d'Uixó artist Pere Ribera, who inspired the Chair to create this work as a symbol and educational resource to contribute to cultures of peace.
Celebration of International Day of Peace, September 21, 2024
The UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace and the Vice-Rectorate for Social Responsibility, Inclusive Policies and Equality of the Universitat Jaume I, with the support of the Rectorate, organised the commemoration of the International Day of Peace on 21 September 2024, promoted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
As is well known, it is a date dedicated to vindicate the ideals of peace of every people and nation, with a special emphasis on environmental, social and economic development from various spheres, such as poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, electricity, environment and social justice. The aim is to raise awareness and train in core skills as essential human skills for peaceful coexistence and necessary for dealing with conflicts, stressful situations or the changing rhythms of everyday life.
“If we know we can do things differently and we do not do them, we have no excuse, we have a responsibility. We need each other to remind us of this responsibility. We need each other to learn to “love” making peace(s) to educate our will”
Vicent Martínez Guzmán
The UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace shows its rejection towards violence in an act in pursuit of peace.
As a result of the war that has recently broken out in Ukraine, and remembering other forgotten conflicts, the students of the Master today have said YES to peace through the reading of the quotes of the philosopher Vicent Martínez Guzmán, founder of the Chair. The quotes have been read in different languages, including voices of different parts of the Globe in order to imbue with that peace message from an intercultural perspective, objectives for which the Chair works.
The aim of the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace is to make a calling for constructing peace cultures, needed nowadays in this socio-political conjuncture we are living.
"The pacifist are the realist, utopians are those who try to achieve peace by violent menas"
In honor of the founder of the Master and Doctorate in International Peace, Conflict and Development Studies, Dr. Vicente Martínez Guzmán, this library is created to keep alive his legacy in Peace Studies and Research. Thus, this library makes available to students, teachers, academics, practitioners and the international research community online resources and free access to a wide variety of articles, books, and workshops produced by Vicent Martínez Guzmán throughout his last 30 years of work.
Martínez Guzmán was a man of broad consensus. He believed that human beings have many alternatives to confront conflicts by non-violent methods, therefore in his essays he proposed a plurality of peace(s), there will never be only one peace. Peace for Guzman is diverse, different, plural and all of them will help in the transformation of the conflict.
His commitment and legacy will remain as an example so that peace seeds sprout around the world.
