Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) is a higher education institution under the Muhammadiyah organization, officially established on October 24, 1981, by a decree of the Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture. It evolved from the Muhammadiyah Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) and the Muhammadiyah Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIM) in Surakarta, which were merged to form UMS.
UMS traces its roots back to 1957, originating as the Surakarta branch of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Muhammadiyah University Jakarta. Initially, it offered undergraduate programs in General Education, Economics, and Islamic Studies with a modest beginning of 51 students and a few staff members.
Over time, UMS expanded its faculties, adding programs in areas like Psychology, Geography, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine, Communication, and Law. The Faculty of Law (FH) of UMS, established in 1981, achieved significant progress, including Accreditation A from the Indonesian National Accreditation Board and ISO 9001 certification, reflecting its high standards in legal education.
UMS's graduate programs, including its Master’s and Doctoral programs in Law, have gained recognition for their quality and international standing. It has contributed significantly to the development of education and research in Indonesia and continues to be a respected institution both nationally and internationally.
