Hi scientists! We are going to be starting a new project where we will create our own mini gardens! There will be 12 pots in total and 3 different types of plants/vegetables/flowers. Each type of plant you choose will get 4 pots. We will track the growth of our gardens each day, and takes pictures and record data on a Google Document. I can't wait to get started!
First you will need to choose which three different types of plants you want to grow. If you get stuck, click on this link to give you some ideas of what to plant.
You will need 12 pots for the plants. These can be decomposable, plastic, pottery, or even egg cartons! Be creative!
You will need to plant your seeds for each type of plant in 4 pots.
Label each pot using a popsicle stick or a toothpick with a flag, so you can clearly see which pot has what type of plant. For example, if you have carrots, the 4 pot labels should say carrot 1, carrot 2, carrot 3, and carrot 4.
Follow the seed packet to see how deep the seeds need to be planted.
Make careful decisions about where you will place your pots, and keep your plants away from any pets or younger siblings.
*If you have any concerns about getting materials for the project, please reach out to me and we will make accommodations!
Under our Google Classroom Science tab, there is a link to a data collection table template that you will use to record and collect data from your mini garden. I also have it here that you can click and it will bring you to the document. Our investigation will last a total of 40 days! We will conduct a research project later on in our investigations, and the template for that is in the same Google Document.
Here are the due dates and schedule for our mini garden project:
Week 1:
Set up your mini garden project and plant your seeds.
Fill out your data collection table daily.
Create a Flipgrid to introduce your mini garden.
Week 2:
Fill out your data collection table daily.
Week 3:
Fill out your data collection table daily.
Pick your research question for your mini garden research project.
Week 4:
Fill out your data collection table daily.
Set up your mini garden research project and plant your seeds.
Create a Flipgrid to explain your research question and how you will conduct your investigation.
Week 5:
Fill out your data collection table daily.
Week 6:
Fill out your data collection table daily.
Create your last Flipgrid summarizing your mini garden and your research results.
Write your reflections in your journals.
After you open the document, type your first and last name where it currently says _____'s Mini Garden.
Each day for 40 days, you will write the data in the data collection table, write any observations that you see or maybe don't see, and take a picture of your garden to visually track its progress over time.
Write at least 2-3 sentences per day for your observations.
Don't get discouraged if your garden doesn't grow as fast as some of your peers. Seeds take time to grow and everyone's experience will be a little different and that's okay!
Here are some examples from my previous mini garden project:

Let's put our brains to the test!
Here is an example of my research question and plan.
Along with your mini garden, you will also conduct research on your own about your mini garden and a question that you may have about it. You will create a research question that is answerable through your investigation with your mini garden.
In a Flipgrid, you will explain what your research question is, how you will conduct your investigation (details of what procedures and steps you will need to take), and the kind of data you want to collect (qualitative, quantitative, sketches, etc.). You will follow the template that is in the same Google Document as your mini garden project. On the template you will fill out your goal and conclusion to the research project as well.
You will have 2 weeks to conduct your research and investigation, so choose your research question wisely. Make sure you are only changing 1 variable or factor for your research project.
Throughout the mini garden project, you will have to complete a few different assessments. This will help track your progress with the project! Here are the following assessments for the project:
Flipgrids: There will be a total of 3 Flipgrids for this mini garden project. One will be the introduction to your garden. The second will be the research question and explanation for your mini garden research project. The third will be a summary of the mini garden project, and what observations and conclusions you can make about your mini garden. The details for each assignment are posted to our Flipgrid page for Science.
Data Collection Table: Throughout the 40 days of the mini garden project, you will be responsible for filling out your data collection table daily. The table will be submitted at the end of the project for a grade.
Journal Reflection: After the project is complete, you will write a 1-2 paragraph reflection about what you learned from the project and if there was anything that stood out to you during this investigation. The journals won't be collected, but we will have a class discussion so be prepared with your reflection.
