All students need to feel represented in the classroom, and have access to different books, literature, and materials that display a diverse range of people, cultures, religions, races, disabilities, languages, and genders. Embedding multicultural and social justice into different subjects in school will help students learn more about their own cultures, and the other cultures that make up the class and our diverse world. It is also important to think about the posters and pictures in the classroom, to ensure that students of all different races and genders are included. Students can make deeper connections to the material if they can see themselves represented in the literature. Using multicultural books and representations in the class with remove barriers and limitations as to what students think they can accomplish. Using multicultural an social justice literature in all subjects in school, will help students feel comfortable and safe in the classroom. In math specifically, it is important to show students how anyone can be a mathematician regardless of race, gender, or disability. Students may also have new motivation in school if they start to see themselves or their cultures and races included in the lessons for multiple subjects.
