Creating a safe and supportive environment for all students is essential in helping all learners succeed!
A future educator learning how to mold and shape the young minds of tomorrow.
Hi there, my name is Savanah Seay and I am a senior at Bridgewater State University. I am a double major in Elementary Education and Mathematics. I completed my entire Mathematics major last fall in 2020. I am completed the Professional Education Block Program in the spring of 2021. In the fall of 2021, I will start my student teaching to complete my undergraduate program and receive my initial teacher licensure.
I have been a member of the Math Club since the fall semester in 2018. From this experience, I have had the privilege of attending inspiring seminars and building relationships with fellow students, staff, and faculty. I have held the position as Treasurer for 3 years now. In 2019, I was a part of the Open Lab Night held at Bridgewater State University. Parents and children from all different school districts were invited to join different clubs and engage in activities and games that showed science and math can be exciting and fun. Our club had different math stations set up that focused on different math strategies and ways you could approach them. Once a child figured out the strategy a smile would grow from ear to ear, and I was so grateful be to apart of that experience. I was also accepted into Pi Mu Epsilon, which is the U.S. honorary National Mathematics Society.
So far in my elementary program, I have had the opportunity to observe in elementary school classrooms and work with teachers from grade levels K-5. From this amazing experience, I have learned a multitude of teaching strategies, educational resources, and techniques for classroom management. From the Professional Education Program experience, I worked with three different schools in Taunton, New Bedford, and Bridgewater to assist teachers online and work with students to gain hands on experience. Pre-COVID, I had the chance to take students aside and administer tests, be a part of lessons, be in charge of groups of students, chaperon field trips, and watch over the classroom if the teacher needed to step out. In 2020, I had the opportunity to tutor a family friend who was struggling in math during her 8th grade year. She had given up on her school work, but with the teamwork between her teacher, her mother, and myself, she grew into an absolute super star! There is no greater feeling than seeing the light bulb go off when she understood a topic after struggling with it. I am extremely proud of her hard work and dedication and I am glad to say, she enjoys going to math class now. At the end of the 2021 school year, I was a substitute teacher for Fall River Public schools, working with elementary and community schools. In the summer of 2021, I had the opportunity to work for Coaching4Change as a college mentor for middle school students in Fall River Public Schools. During this program, I was able to build connections with students, manage classrooms, and assist and take over lessons.
I am nationally certified in Microsoft Suite Applications such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook. In high school, my trade was Business Technology, so I have a strong background with using technology. Dance has always been a passion of mine and I danced for 17 years total and 7 years competitively. At my dance school, I was a dance teacher and taught hip hop, ballet, jazz, and tap to ages 2-12. I learned very quickly the importance of classroom management and how to keep all of my students focused throughout the class. I will be forever grateful for the relationships I built with the students and watching them grow each year was a privilege. I will be the first generation to graduate from a University in my family, which is an enormous accomplishment that I am very proud of. I aspire to be a role model and set an example for my younger family members, that it is possible to achieve whatever you pour your heart into. I also love to travel and learn about new cultures, places, and people in the world. I also like photography and taking pictures of nature. I grew up with lots of animals, and I currently have a dog that I love dearly.
I am passionate about making learning exciting and engaging for students. Learning should be active and hands-on for students to get the most out of their education. Creating a safe learning environment for all students is very important to me. I will strive to make my future classroom inclusive, welcoming, and safe for all different types of learners. Student differences will be embraced in my future classroom, and multiculturalism and social justice will be included in multi-subjects and facets of my classroom. All students should feel represented in the classroom. I want to make sure I provide equitable opportunities to meet the needs of all of my future students.
I will be happy working with any grade to gain different experiences and to work with students of different age levels. After graduation from Bridgewater State University, I will work towards getting my master’s degree. I want to make a difference in my school district and be an asset to my community by sharing my knowledge and skills. There is always more that we can learn and I truly believe knowledge is power. I have always had a passion and love for school and I hope to share that with my future students. I believe if a child grows up loving school, he or she will continue to love school for the rest of their life. My goal is to better understand education from a teacher’s point of view, so I can be fully prepared after graduating from Bridgewater State University. My dream is to be a lifelong learner, and instill that same desire in my future students. I believe if I can show students the importance of education, hard work, dedication, and perseverance, there will be nothing they can’t accomplish.
