Doing our research and conceptualisation of our visuals on our PDLP devices in our CCA sessions and Family Time (for CCAs).
CPL Shazrizam was working as part of the team to do research. We had to do it on our personal devices even as a group, to comply with the pandemic SMMs that we needed to follow.
We chose to work on the Google document platform so that we all could work on the same document and also met up through Zoom conferences to discuss in the pandemic situation.

PYA was a project that created a big awareness between me and my friends and family. Due to COVID 19 situation we as cadets were not able to interact with the community and talked to them. But to make sure that we did our part, we sent messages and created greater awareness through a highly-accessible communication platform, which is WhatsApp. I had joined NPCC only last year, one year after my peers. In the year before last year, I was in the Girl Guides in another secondary school. In my opinion, both CCAs have different values, tasks, and focus. Step by step, I came to know what being in NPCC is about and through this PYA project task, I had an opportunity to experience and get to know what being an NPCC cadet is about and what is the main focus of this CCA. So basically, I got into a group and planned what Crime Prevention information we can share and we choose to send to our friends and family members. We thought about the important messages we need to tell them and how to explain to them why this crime prevention is so important.
The key challenges we faced were how to explain to them the pieces of information, how to make them understand the intention of the information. Also, another difficulty was for us as cadets, we were given groups to do the PYA document. We didn’t get many opportunities to gather together as a group to actually work on it. We had only 1 time to do the project face-to-face. This was one of the difficulties we faced. Lastly, my friends and family members were worried as the form asked for personal information. It was a hard time to convince and tell them that it’s for educational purposes and that those personal information would be kept confidential.
Lastly, I really think that this project would be far more effective if we are not facing the pandemic and its restrictions and when we can have more face-to-face discussion times.
PYA was a project that required a rather large amount of confidence. We needed to be confident in the information that we gathered, we needed to be confident of our ideas- whether or not the information of the scam is deemed suitable, whether or not the amount of the information is enough to carry the message through or how we are going to approach the public with this set of information and how are we supposed to explain to them our objectives- and we needed to be able to carry out this process from the planning stage all the way to the execution stage.
This project allowed my team and me to firm up our ideas and also allowed us to better communicate with people who lack awareness about these scams. It allowed everyone to realise that looking at the fellow NPC officers doing these and getting rejected in the public, we understand why it is so hard to do this and that we needed to find a way to do it with maximum success rate. The challenges we experienced were not new, but the way we approached it was the new part.
Our first challenge was not being able to gather everyone together in the same place to plan what we were going to do due to COVID restrictions and the new school measures that were put in place. We tried the online method but most of the members were busy and we had a lot of lag-time making it difficult to discuss and collaborate at the same time. But in the end we were able to find a suitable time to gather everyone while adhering to all the rules.
Another difficulty was trying to ascertain the information to select and to include in our potential sharing. We gathered all the information we wanted to put in and only took out the key points, the reading points we clustered together to make a smaller group of information.
What could be improved was the level of preparedness of the members in the team. We could have prepared more specifically with regard to who to do which task and to determine the deadline to complete the project. It was only when everyone came together that we could get together to effectively evaluate and put in place all the necessary edits and carry out the tasks smoothly and well.
"I have learnt about the various ways that we can ensure that we do not end up as victims of impersonation scams, some of which I didn’t know I should abide by. I believe this project will do good to the community as I have seen news of countless cases of scams online and I feel that this is the result of the lack of awareness of the preventive measure we can take to stop this crime. So this project that was carried out is sure to benefit many. The information that I have received has been extremely useful as I am not really a tech-savvy person so I am not familiar with social media platforms such as facebook. Now that I know how to prevent scams from happening to myself, I am able to use online platforms with ease without the fear of getting scammed."
