Blender Maya Converter is a tool for transferring Mesh Light (Vray) Camera and Material (Vray) between Maya and Blender.

This tool for an artist who needs to transfer scenes between Blender and Maya. Might be in use rendering, modeling or another tool of both software, which is a better tool for each.

For a sample, when you finish your model in Maya. You use Maya Vray render, but need to render with Eevee or Cycle in a blender, you can send your scenes to a blender and automatically convert shade and light to blender system.

On the other hand, you can be modelled with blender tool and shading and lighting, but need to render with vray.You can send your scene to Maya and automatically convert shade and light to Maya vray render system and set quality upon yours.

  • [ Save Setting ] Save your setting and communicate with another user. You can use this option to make user settings and save different file paths for communicating with another artist, which uses different software (in this time is Blender and Maya).For transfer assets to each other.

  • [ Folder Path ] setting the folder path for transfer file between user.

  • [ - / + ] add and remove user for saving difference setting.

  • [ SEND/GET ] send and get object between Blender and Maya.

  • SEND/GET [ MESH ] turn-on this option when your need to send or get mesh.

  • SEND/GET [ LIGHT ] turn-on this option when your need to send or get light

  • SEND/GET [ CAMERA ] turn-on this option when your need to send or get camera.

  • SEND/GET [ MATERIAL ] turn-on this option when your need to send or get material relate to mesh.

  • SEND [ SELECT] send only select object if this option is turn-on and export all object.

  • SEND [ INVISIBLE] send all objects even object is invisible when an option is turn-on.

  • GET [ Light Mult ] Multiply intensity of light by your number.

  • GET [ Keep Transformation ] If you already import an object and adjust position rotation or scale the existing model, need to import it again. if you turn on this option Import object still the same position rotation and scale . if not turn-on your object reset to your original file.

  • [ SET IES ] set IES file for all vray IES light is selected
    ( only Maya )

  • SEND/GET [ Scenes Scale ]set scene scale for send and get (only Blender)

Limitation

  • Transfer material depending on a definition in file mat_dict.json.

  • This tool uses an alembic file apart to send objects. can not send controller or modifier at all. You can only send the final scene as a still model or animation with alembic cache.

  • Why choose alembic, not FBX.When you have a name that is not a number/character Maya FBX not support that name which hard to reconnection any node

  • This tool work on alembic import/export . Which makes this plug-in have limitation same alembic system.

  • Not support for instance object.

  • You can only submit materials and attributes in specific materials that are defined in the file mat_dict.json

Warning

  • Naming Maya not allow to have repeat naming. please beware of duplicate name (even mesh and material cannot repeat in Maya)

  • Be careful when you send by custom option to send. IF you get all updates, but you send only mesh you'll get updates of light, shade and camera not the same version with mesh.

  • Need to unpack texture first in Blender scene. In a blender, if you have texture packing you need to unpack first because can not file a texture path in Maya.

  • Expert animation with cache only. Not have a keyframe.

About this tool

I try to use a blender to speed up work and found the advantage of a blender. But not convenient for manual convert material and object, so made this tool.

Blender can use to support VFX process even not directly, but you can use it for a part or maybe finish your work. For example, if you need to fast render in your acceptable quality you can use Eevee for rendering. Use the many modeling add-on of Blender to help you faster modeling. Etc.

next goal

  • Increase supported material nodes for Vary in Maya.

  • Support for Arnold and Redshift renderer in Maya.

  • Support for 3ds Max for communicating with Maya and Blender.
