Looking Back at 2019-20,
Moving Forward to 2020-21
As we move into a truly unprecedented new school year, we want to take a moment to look back on everything that the Boosters and the Blacow community accomplished in 2019-20, and thank YOU for your contributions to every success.
We kicked off the year with a free ice cream social to welcome new and returning Blacow families to the school year. It was a fun evening and a wonderful way to connect with each other.
As the year began, the Boosters invited all teachers to become members and apply for grants of up to $500 to purchase supplies and provide learning opportunities for their students. We continued to approve grant applications through June.
Our 2nd Annual Fitness Frenzy fundraiser with a video game theme was a big success. Blacow not only met our fundraising goal, but more than doubled it at $25,000! And it was so much fun!
The funds raised went toward a campus beautification day, Blacow's field trip fund, playground equipment, and filtered water dispensers and backpack clips that will be installed around campus. Thank you to every donor, volunteer, staff member and student who participated!
The funds also let Boosters sponsor an assembly with Bryan Skavnak, founder of the Be The Nice Kid movement, to spread a little kindness around our school.
We hosted Make a Difference Day in October, with over 50 volunteers who did landscaping, repainted the US map, painted murals around water fountains, repainted the Blacow sign, and cleaned our storage shed.
Next we hosted our annual fall event, and the campus came to life with over 600 guests, a DJ, folklorico dancers, a glow way, trunk or treat and the classroom pumpkin contest!
In December we hosted a Holiday Shop where students could buy gifts for family and friends.
At the end of 2019, we created our very own Whoville at our winter event complete with holiday crafts, cookie decorating, a Who hair salon, and photo stations with both Santa and the Grinch!
In January we started Sweet Treat Fridays as a way to bring students together for a quick social hour after school.
In February we sold Smencil grams for students to send each other, and hosted our annual Family Dance with a Candyland theme.
Throughout the year we hosted Bobcats Dine Out events in partnership with local businesses to raise funds and bring the Blacow community together one evening a month. The March Dine Out ended up being our final event of the school year.
Our scheduled reading event, Bingo Night, and end-of-the-year Block Party were cancelled as we sheltered in place.
In acknowledgment of all the end-of-year traditions Blacow's promoting students were missing, we purchased yearbooks for all promoting 5th and 6th grade students.
The top priority for our events was always to give our students (and the entire Blacow community) an opportunity to have fun, create memories and strengthen friendships. If you attended any of our events, we truly hope your family enjoyed the events as much as we did.
Even as we move into a year that is unlike any before, we are keeping our priorities in order: our goal is to bring together parents and staff to build and strengthen our community, have fun and create memories.
Stay tuned for new events and opportunities to connect.
We love Blacow,
Your 2020-21 Officers
