While trees are a marvel of nature, they aren't always cooperative with homeowners. Some push roots into basements, some grow too fast and threaten power lines or windows, and some die in untimely fashion, making an eyesore.
The cost of hiring professional tree service companies varies, but here is an overview of typical tree service prices.
How much does tree removal, a stump grind, tree pruning cost?
In order to determine the cost of tree services, several factors must be taken into account, including the type of tree, its height, and how difficult it is to access the tree.
Removing a tree is by far the most expensive service. It usually includes cutting it down section by section, then hauling away the pieces. Usually, grinding the remaining stump incurs an extra charge.
You will pay from a few hundred dollars for a small oak to $1,000 or more for a large oak to cut down. Oak trees can grow as tall as 60 feet and are extremely difficult to cut.
Pine trees, meanwhile, are easier to cut, but they grow much taller, which means pine tree removal cost varies more.
The cost of removing a tree can vary greatly.
Were there any damages caused by the tree's fall?
Does the tree have to be removed even though it’s still alive?
Are the damages to private property or public property?
Will an insurance company cover the cost of removing a tree from a house?
We have dealt with over a thousand insurance claims where trees have fallen on houses. Within that time the one thing that continues to surface is the term “reasonable and customary charges.” Generally speaking, your insurance company will pay to remove the tree from your house, but they want to make sure that the price that they are paying is “reasonable and customary.”
The following are some of the key factors in determining how much your project will cost. Note: This will differ from tree to tree.
Will cranes be required to complete the project?
How many man hours will it take?
Does the site have special requirements for bringing in heavy equipment, such as building special access ramps or bridges?
Does the work have to be done at night? Or is it dangerous?
Can the work be done on the weekend, requiring after-hours rates?
Do we have to reschedule previous jobs to get to your emergency job?
These and other issues will all have an impact on the pricing of goods and services to help determine what is “reasonable and customary”.
How much do Tree Services cost?
The cost for tree services can be different in various regions of the country. However, there are some factors that have been compiled here that are considered to be determinants of pricing for tree work. One thing is for sure, tree work comes with a cost, and in fact, it is not cheap, especially if provided by certified tree experts. A tree company charges a fee for insurance and equipment, and both are necessary to provide high-quality service on your trees.
Make sure an arborist has both liability insurance and worker compensation before hiring them. This insurance is essential to protect you against any liability that might arise from damages caused by the tree company's workers while they work on your property. In order to cover these expenses, the tree service should have at least $1,000,000 in coverage. If they do not, you’ll be responsible for any damage you incur, whether it’s a small or significant amount.
Three factors determine the cost of removing trees: location, tree size, and species.
Tree Size - A tree's size is the most important factor in determining how much the tree removal will cost. The larger the tree, the more expensive the cost for tree removal will be. This is because it needs more workers to handle the project and the significant possibility of using heavy equipment to take it down compared to removing a much smaller tree. Trees come in three size categories when it comes to pricing: below 40', between 40'-60', and beyond 80'.
Tree Location - When deciding the cost, we also look at the location of the tree to be removed. If the tree is near a fixed structure, such as a building or a power line, you can expect that it will cost more to remove it. It is important to consider certain risk factors when removing a tree near these structures, and these factors are accounted for when computing the total cost. It is possible for the price of tree removal to increase if additional labor and equipment is required
Tree Species - There are certain types of trees that are more difficult to get rid of than others. The trees that have multiple trunks usually cost more to remove due to the risks in cutting them in half.
With all these factors, tree removal can cost from $400 to more than $2,500 for the larger ones.
Tree trimming and tree removal are subject to the same factors as tree removal, however, there is an additional one.
Tree Size - The larger the tree, the more complicated the job, which means the more equipment is necessary, as there are many branches and limbs to cut with a large tree.
Tree Location - If the tree is near a building or a power line, more labor and equipment will be required to trim it, which will make the cost higher.
Tree Species - Like tree removal, a tree with multiple trunks will be more challenging to trim the necessary limbs and branches.
The Extent of Trimming Required - Overgrown trees need more trimming than that which is well cared for, so the price of trimming is naturally higher.
These factors may result in tree trimming costs ranging from $200 to over $1,000 for the bigger trees.
Stump Grinding Cost
It is generally determined by the size of the stump the cost for stump grinding will be. Most stumps with an average size cost between $50 and $100, while the large stumps cost between $300 and $500. Additional factors to consider when determining stump grinding pricing include the tree's species, its location, and its age.
Cost of tree pruning
If your tree is in a difficult-to-reach place or if you live in a rural area, you should expect to have to pay more for hauling the dead tree away. It costs an average of $1,300 to remove a large tree.
Getting your tree pruned back rather than removed is also an option; however, this will depend again on the height at which the crew has to reach and the disposal method they'll use for the cut branches.
With an average price of $450 for tree pruning, the range is approximately $375 to $525. The cost goes up for larger trees.
Discounts on tree service are not included in these prices because a lot of service providers offer discounts to members.
Tree removal companies offer on-site chipping or will cut up pruned branches into firewood for an extra charge.
It is important to realize that even in cases of full removal, the tree stump remains. Stump removal, which involves grinding down or digging out the tree stump, is frequently an additional cost ranging from $65 to $350.
The cost of a contractor will also depend on their past experiences and on the equipment they use. Experts usually utilize boom trucks that can raise up to 70 feet, allowing them to work on high or buried branches.
A few companies employ certified arborists who have received specialized training in tree removal and care.
These experts not only have the tools necessary to prune trees, but they know what time of year it is best to cut back branches depending on tree species and where on the tree a cut will cause the least damage.
Some tree services will offer free, on-site estimates. Be sure to get an estimate in writing before signing any agreement, and be wary of any estimate you receive over the phone or online.
The price could dramatically change if it isn't followed up with a personal site visit.
For example, dead or fallen trees, which are easier to haul away than their living counterparts, will still cost between $75 to $150.
Tall trees — especially those that are beyond the reach of standard machinery — will cost at least $1,500 to completely remove.
The price may be higher for a pruning job that requires the company to come close to power lines or buildings.
Most licensed companies are insured in the event of any damage, but don't want to take unnecessary risks. A special circumstance that deserves your attention is when branches touch power lines. It is often possible to call your local utility provider in this case, who will dispatch someone to cultivate the branches for free
They are responsible for the lines and cannot risk causing damage to the power system or harming their employees.
You may be able to take on small-scale tree pruning with an extendable tool ($30) or stump grinding with a rented grinder ($75 to $150 for half a day) on your own.
For tree pruning, you'll want a thick pair of gloves, safety glasses, at the very least, a long-sleeve shirt. Do it during autumn or winter when temperatures are lower to reduce impacts.
Wear ear protection if you're grinding a stump in addition to safety glasses.
Try digging out the stump completely once you have worked your way across it. If it refuses to budge, repeat the process.
