Introducing the Time Capsule

Help us reflect on this past year and answer the question: What has happened since June 2020, and is it enough?

We are reflecting on the past year of Black creativity and activism within the Ivy League through a submission competition called, the Black Ivy Time Capsule.

Sponsored by Belonging at Yale, the Time Capsule will be a four-part newsletter comprised of submissions from current students and other affiliates of the Ivy League available on our Instagram and Twitter pages, website, and via email.

Entrants to the competition will be eligible for $1000 worth of prizes.

Who can submit?

Any person of any race, ethnicity, or background who self-identifies as an affiliate of the Ivy League can submit to the competition

What can submissions look like?

We are asking Ivy League students to submit content produced between June 2020 and June 2021. This includes creative works, such as music, poetry, videos, and short stories, as well as more activist content, such as opinion pieces, extended essays, and interviews.

What are the goals of this project?

Synthesize, analyze, and build upon last year’s submissions to @blackivystories Instagram page

After successfully receiving over 350 anonymous accounts of racism against Black people in the Ivy League, we believe it is our responsibility to provide insights, recommendations, and verifiable evidence for creating positive change in the coming year-- and we are confident this project will help us do that. We are hoping to receive content about the unequal impacts of the global pandemic, the resurgence of #BLM, the controversial US election, and the resulting policy changes. With these stories, plus the editorial work our staff can provide, we hope to spark a necessary conversation about the past year and the year going forward.

Connect with Black creators in the Ivy League

We hope to create a space that is aimed explicitly for supporting and uplifting the voices of black creators and anti-racist content in the ivy league, and by doing that we allow their work to be shared with audiences that may otherwise never see it. Working together this action will help to reinforce a creative community that can exist far beyond the scope of the final product
