The Black Hats of the 101st Airborne Division is a brigade composed entirely of instructors, known for their expertise in training soldiers for the challenges of air assault operations. Standing as the backbone of the division, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, ensuring that all who join us exemplify what it means to be a 101st soldier.
As instructors, we lead by example, setting the standard in leadership, accountability, and teamwork. Our mission is not only to train soldiers, but to forge capable leaders who carry the values of the 101st Airborne Division.
Our brigade motto shows our commitment to ensuring that all students not only pass Air Assault School but fully understand all the information they’re given. We believe that true mastery comes from knowing and understanding, and we strive to instill this value in everyone who goes through AAS.
AIR ASSAULT SCHOOL
At Air Assault School (AAS), the Black Hats teach recruits about the 101st Airborne Division and its responsibilities. As a part of the Forces Command, this division specializes in air assault and rappelling operations. AAS content covers important topics, such as;
Takeoff commands
Rappelling
Breaching
General USAR information, such as the Chain of Command and how to properly conduct an inspection
All content covered prepares Air Assault School students for the AAS Final Exam, their last stepping stone before officially becoming a part of the 101st Airborne Division. In addition, personnel who pass AAS are eligible to obtain the Air Assault Badge, a badge showcasing their proficiency in rappelling and air assault operations.
