Balbec Days
August 15th, 2026
The historical marker at Balbec has an inscription that reads "Tradition says Eliza Harris of Uncle Tom's cabin fame rested here in her flight to Canada".
Eliza Harris and her baby are believed to have visited the cabin of Jimmy and Rachel Silliven as they travel the Underground Railroad.
The journey of Eliza Harris was the inspiration for the character "Eliza" in Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'.
