We propose that in the process of re-centering and converting OSSCR into the Restorative Justice Center, that the University designate this physical space as the primary avenue for students, faculty, and staff to seek reconciliation for incidents and other experiences pertaining to race, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexual orientation. The Center should also serve as a space for students and faculty to seek reconciliation for plagiarism and academic integrity concerns while ensuring that students have the support necessary to ensure individual success and academic integrity moving forward.
Resident Assistants and Residence Life Staff should be relieved of this responsibility as they have not been adequately prepared to apply restorative justice practices. However, a more demographically diverse RA staff should be hired and they should be trained within the cultural competency framework as a preventative strategy for mitigating incidents involving race, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexual orientation.
The Restorative Justice Center should be staffed with facilitators who can personally relate to the struggles of Black and other students of color as well as other marginalized groups. They should be adequately trained to work with the unique experiences of Black people and other students of color, as well as those with disabilities, those who are undocumented, LGBTQ+ people, and the issues individuals in these communities face.
The Coalition for Northeastern Student Organizations of Color, led by Students Against Institutional Discrimination, are willing to convene student leaders to develop additional details and proposals for this Restorative Justice Center over the Fall 2020 semester in order to assist University leadership in adequately meeting student needs.
Recognizing the continued disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black communities, the University should meaningfully engage with the NU CARE platform hosted by the Progressive Student Alliance, which is meant to help facilitate a safe return to campus.
