Skin Care

Always remember every skin type is different, therefore it is important to understand your skin type to ensure you are giving your face what it needs!

How to know my skin type?

Top 4 tips when it comes to Black skincare:

1. To keep skin moisturized, supple, and smooth it is important to cleanse and moisturize daily. Using a gentle cleanser that will not clog the pores is important. Any cleanser or moisturizer that says “non-comedogenic” is a perfect fit. Massage the cleanser onto the face with clean fingers, then rinse it off with warm water and pat the skin dry with a clean towel. An ideal moisturizer would be one that contains humectants, such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid to keep the skin extra hydrated.

2. Stay protected from the sun and wear sunscreen. It is important for everyone with all types of skin to use adequate sun protection. Sun exposure can cause dark spots known as melasma which makes it important to apply sunscreen to exposed skin all year round even in the winter and cloudy days.

3. Treat acne early. Treating acne early could prevent it from getting worse and leading to acne scars. A result of acne scars is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which can be a difficult process to get rid of once the acne has made a scar. Having a clean, oil-free daily skincare routine is important to prevent acne. Acne treatments that are not too harsh for younger skin would be exfoliators or masks with charcoal as well as overnight acne patches.

4. Consider any areas of uneven skin tone. Hyperpigmentation, or areas of skin discoloration, can affect people with any skin tone. While sunscreen can prevent new patches of hyperpigmentation from developing, it does not get rid of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation such as acne scars or dry/uneven areas on the face. Ingredients such as: Niacinamide, Salicylic Acid, Rosehip Oil, and Vitamin A all help even out the skin while still being gentle for skin of colour. They also help with hyperpigmentation and prevent acne and acne scarring.
