Lab Director

Dr. Vanessa V. Volpe

(she/her/hers)

I am an applied developmental health psychologist and health equity researcher working to understand the complex ways that racism impacts the health of Black young adults from across the African diaspora in the United States. With over 10 years of experience in this area and transdisciplinary training, I work at the intersections of developmental, social, and health psychology, media and technology, population health, public health, and sociology. I am also the founding director of the Black Health Lab, a collective group of stakeholders and trainees united by our passion for informing efforts to move the dial toward equitable and socially-just Black wellness and thriving in the United States, especially in the context of pervasive engagement with media and technology. My current research focuses on the health impacts of positive and negative race-related experiences in online and technological environments. I am excited to serve as a Consulting Editor for Health Psychology beginning in 2024.

Before coming to NCSU, Dr. Volpe was an Assistant Professor at Ursinus College. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her B.S. from New York University.

Mentorship of the next generation of scholars is one of Dr. Volpe's passions and top priorities. She committed to training students from marginalized social identity positions, thereby contributing to the equitable representation of change agents and research leaders in psychological science.
