This is a project for ENGL 4120 at Western Michigan University by Brooke Klusek.
Our goal here is to bring about change to aid in one of the biggest human developments that the world will face in the next decades. It is important for us to make a difference and protect our precious natural resource, water.
Our Mission to Protect Water
Overview
The World Water Climate Council (WWCC) is a project that unifies many nations across the globe with a common aim, to protect and provide water for citizens. This resource plays a big role in driving away or bringing people into new places. Our goal is to make sure that the limited fresh water that we have can be used by as many people as possible. While water is important, it also has its dangers. We want to try and reduce its damages to society and make the world a more habitable place.
The Issue
People are moving out of their lifelong homes to find new residents for different reasons, and the world's climate plays a large role in that. It is something that is happening now but will become even more prevalent in future. We are currently facing a "climate emergency" all over the earth. The temperature of the atmosphere is going up, sea levels are rising, severe weather rates are increasing, etc. All of these are factors that cause people to have to move to more habitable places. These occurrences are leading to problems where people are living, and water is a big part of it.
Goals
Protect water sources
Give people access to clean water
Support those who are displaced due to the water crisis, especially by climate related droughts or floods
We want to help as many people as we can in this situation. There are actions that we can take to take care of this problem. Citizen involvement is also important, but with the formation our organization we'll begin make a difference. The measures that we take aim to help those in need as well as inspire others to make choices in life to help save water. In order to help those who are displaced, we will take different measures to make sure they get access to the resources they need.
Addressing the Problem
Water is needed all over the globe and for lots of different reasons. People need it to drink and crops need it to grow. Each of these is important and we only have a limited supply of fresh water to go around. People are going to move to places where they are able to get this resource more easily. Climate change has played its role in reducing the amount of it already, plus the wasteful decisions of humans.
Severe Weather
The frequency and intensity of severe weather events all over have gone up in the past decades and can be connected to climate change. These range from wildfires to hurricanes to droughts, and all of them have been affecting this beloved resource. Wildfires rage in different spots, from the west coast of the United States or the continent of Australia. In order to put these huge wildfires out, water is often used. It is a must to stop these fiery rampages but is also indirectly tied to climate change. Sometimes these fires take months to put completely out, which mean very frequent water use for it as well. Hurricanes come from oceans on the east side of North America and their destruction to infrastructure can be unbelievable. The tearing a part of homes and the plumbing systems that are built into them can affect the water sources there. Droughts cause the weather in an area to become very dry. This can cause more evaporation in places where water could reside, leaving it bare. Each of these severe weather occurrences is eating up our needed water sources. If temperature rise is prevented from going any higher, then that might stop this use. Many migrants could move to places that have not experienced such events and still have plentiful water.
Agriculture
This term includes both the growing of crops and the raising of animals for food and other products. Each of these tasks requires water and a lot of it. Water is needed to grow food crops like wheat and rice. However, there are options that would use less such as different beans. If we switch to diets based around crops that use less water, then the amount for this food category would decrease. Irrigation methods that conserve water should also be applied to crops. Another source of water consumption on the farm are animals that are being raised for their meat. Not only that, but they also eat the food being produced with that water too. While they are growing, animals like cows also release methane, which is a greenhouse gas. People should also try to incorporate less meat in their daily lives. This would reduce the market, and ultimately be a positive outcome.
Our Plans
In order to achieve our first goal of protecting water sources, there are a few things that we hope to implement. Changing these aspects of society would help evaporation rates, water quality and quantity, and weather destruction.
Bring down levels of carbon emissions
Reduce amount of single-use plastic products
Fight the over drawing of groundwater
Irrigation regulations
The next goal of the distribution of fresh water requires some different methods, but they are equally as important. By following these guidelines, clean water would access would go up and less people would have to move in order to survive.
Utilize technology to sustainably package water
Create accessible meeting points for getting drinking water
Make sure water is sent fairly to places in need
The last major goal that we have want to achieve is more specific and aimed towards helping those who have already been forced to move because of the lack of water in their homes. We want to add improvements to the world in the spots where people need aid.
Create shelters in areas with more water access
Make sure there is running water works in these shelters (bathrooms, kitchen areas)
Stamp system to ensure each person in shelters get their fair share of water
Provide education for kids and employment opportunities for adults
Programs to move to a more permanent home with water
Support teams to help with mental health or get aid with resident documents
For these goals to be achieved, the countries that are part of this initiative need to have good communication and patience. The WWCC wants to help as many as possible, but that would be difficult without working together. We will work with existing community organizations and government officials in order to make sure we can help as much as we can. This is a problem that cannot be dealt with overnight and takes time. Here we hope to get started in lots of locations, so we can have distribution centers and regulations in place, before it is too late.
Conclusion
Even if we are facing complications right now, there are solutions to climate change and the increased migration that will follow it. Our necessary resource of water is currently being affected and its plentifulness is going to continue to fluctuate over time. We have to reduce its usage rates in order to save the earth. Without water, life will change dramatically. The movement of people will also play a role in these levels. Everyone will be in need of water and if we keep acting the way we are, there will never be enough to go around. It is possible for our water to be distributed more equally if we act accordingly. This way more people will be able to find a new home in the world easier or not even have too.
Everyone is just looking for a good place to call home in the world. They want to look out for their loved ones and have as best of a life they can themselves. This mass migration will be tough, but also bring about a global community. We must look at the bright side and make choices in the present to save the future. The World Water Climate Council will do their best to make this future as livable as possible.
