I am primarily working on mathematics education research. My research interests include topics such as the use of technology in mathematics teaching, formative assessment strategies to support students' mathematical understanding, design of tasks that require teachers to orchestrate discussion in the mathematics classroom, practices that require students to think, teachers dealing with tensions in connection with changing practices, and students' access to mathematics regardless of their gender, nationality, etc.
I studied mathematics and German and worked at the Icelandic Hydrological Services (now Icelandic Met Office) on mathematical modelling in hydrology. This lead me to pursue master studies in applied mathematics at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg in Germany. In Freiberg, I continued to connect mathematics with geoscience in Dr. Irmgard Niemeyer's working group that focused on automatization processes for object-based image analysis of satellite imagery data. Alongside my studies, I started teaching mathematics, programming, and languages and found it increasingly fun to teach, which is why I decided to add an upper secondary school teaching licence to my profile. Experiences from my work as a teacher in upper secondary schools sparked my interest in mathematics education research. To begin with, I was curious about developing practices that created access for all students to mathematics and ways in which technology could be implemented in the mathematics classroom. Through my collaboration in a Nordic-Baltic network of mathematics educators and teachers who use the dynamic geometry software GeoGebra, I took part in the initial steps of designing silent video tasks and decided to develop them further in a doctoral project under supervision of Prof. Dr. Freyja Hreinsdóttir at the University of Iceland.
I was lucky at the start of my PhD studies to meet Prof. Dr. Zsolt Lavicza of Johannes Kepler University Linz in Austria and get to join his group of PhD and Post-Doc students. He and Prof. Dr. Markus Hohenwarter, the CEO and founder of GeoGebra, provided me with space to work and think during my yearly visits to the GeoGebra Lab of JKU School of STEAM Education in Linz. After my PhD I continue to work with Zsolt and his team of doctoral students, currently as part of the EU project <colette/>.
