By the end of this lesson, students can:
Investigate reports of studies in digital media and elsewhere for information on their planning and implementation (ACMSP277)
Sampling with skittles/counters (LIT)
The teacher presents each group with an array of coloured counters that represents the total population. The teacher presents the idea of taking a sample of counters that represents this population. The teacher gives a handout that details the instructions for each method of sampling, for example, pick out 25 random counters (random sampling) or line up the counters and pick every 3rd counter (systematic sampling).
Students record their results in a table, with headings of 'colour', 'number', '% of total sample'. The teacher asks prompting questions including: Do your results match your population? Is this a good method of sampling? Why/Why not?
Sampling Card Sort (ICT)
This resource involves matching infographics describing different sampling methods with their respective definitions and examples. Students will use this to self-assess and monitor their understanding of the different sampling methods.
