An automated system is one that does not require humans, they can include small systems like air conditioning in a building or motion sensing burglar alarms to large systems found in airplanes or factories
An automated system usually requires:
Sensors (input)
Microprocessors
Actuators (output)
Sensors just do one thing, they read the environment and then send data onwards.
They do not process data, that is done by the microprocessor
Sensors read analogue data so the data must be translated into digital data before it can be processed.
This is done by an analogue-to-digital converter
