The EMOM movement seeks to democratise the performance of electronic music of all types by offering supportive and inclusive free performance spaces for electronic musicians of all backgrounds and abilities. The Birmingham group is one of many dotted around the globe and was re-started in 2024 after a post-covid hiatus.
There are links to other EMOM groups on the About EMOM pages of this site.
With a large and youthful population, a multicultural vibrancy and a large number of inexpensive and excellent small venues, Birmingham is the perfect place for grassroots music to thrive. There is a history of experimental electronic music in the city which is home to Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Supersonic Festival, BEAST, The Seventh Wave Festival and House of God, the city which spawned Bhangara, Drum and Bass, Soundclash... We hope to become part of that tradition.
There is more information about the history of grassroots music in Birmingham on the Resources pages.
News
After our sensationally varied event last Thursday (18th March), we're pleased to announce something very special for 23rd April. We have a band coming from France and are theming the night on "Francophilia". We hope that everyone performing will bring something Gallic to the party!
Sorry to have to report that we've had to cancel the 29/1/26 event at the School of Jewellery, due external circumstances.
Bleak, indeed!
Well, let's let our hair down with a JAM SESSION!
29th March, 2026 – Centrala : 21.30 – 23.00
We’ve teamed up with NoiseMaker Market to offer our performers the opportunity to be a part of something exciting: a jam session after the main event. It will all be very informal – no timed performance slots – just turn up and JAM. No place for prepared sets here.
Some of the organisers and makers from the exhibition will be taking part, so NOISE is guaranteed!
Unlike our normal events, we’re not booking this one. It would be helpful if you could let us know if you’d like to be part of this – birmingham.emom@gmail.com – and we can sort out some publicity for you in advance.
Check here for details:
https://www.noisemakermarket.co.uk/
Running order of the day:
11.00 – 18.00 – Noise Maker Market
18.00 – 21.30 – Music from some of our own EMOM performers and others – Cries from the LTN, Die Dan Die, Isnt’ses…
21.30 – 23.00 – Jam session with anyone who is there and who turns up!
NOTE: although this evening jam event is not ticketed, the day event IS and you will not be able to have entry to the daytime event without a ticket. You can have free entry to the jam session only after 21.30.
Happy new year to everyone. Hope that 2026 is a good one and that we'll be seeing you soon at one of our events.
The first event of the year will be 22nd January, 2026 at Centrala as usual.
We've got some plans for the year, including more shows at the School of Jewellery and a couple of interesting collaborations. More on those soon.
Our FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY will be on Wednesday 26th November at Centrala, our usual venue. Music! Cake! Stickers!!
Here's something which might be of interest to Birmingham EMOM followers and fans from the The Oram Awards , a day of free workshops for women and the gender-diverse community followed by an open-to-everyone evening of music. Lovely to see that Lilly Sphire - who has performed with us in Birmingham - is part of this.
The tickets are on Resident Advisor - https://ra.co/events/2285665
The organisers tell us:

Great lineup for this one! Two new performers for Birmingham, one first-time performer (anywhere) and a great combination of acts, from very dark and complex Dubstep-inspired sounds to a live-processed trumpet!
Gig 9a!
Another School of Jewellery Special.
This was our "Surround Sound Special" with a quadraphonic mixer and sound-system diffusing the music into the atrium. These irregular events are for invited artists - from our regular roster - who will make the most of the theme of the night.
Photographs and texts soon.
Gig 9!
Our regular event at Centrala.

Gig 8!
Our regular event at Centrala.
Well, that was some event!
Austin Kendrick was in the audience and wrote:
"Eight acts on one bill, the August edition of EMOM Birmingham which took place at Centrala 21.8.25. Pictured are Central Electric, who created an audio cityscape with a laid back bpm followed by new improv trio Intangible Heritage featuring John Biddulph, Lewis Burn and Jack Nelson in which audience members were encouraged to wander around in order to experience different mixes of what was to unfold. Pitch black drones played through transistor radio sized amps with Biddulph's saxophone [sic: bass clarinet] hanging like a twilit mist, the only previous performance by this outfit took place in a cave. There was song-based electronic pop courtesy of Huddersfield based Burning Book who's "The Price We Pay For Love" employs a sparse electric piano motif and a heartfelt vocal delivery. There's modular twists and trickery threaded with public information film dialogue reminiscent of the work of Concretism from the False Maria and finishing off with late night microtonal eeriness calling to mind the likes of Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe from Tom Tebby.
"Next Birmingham EMOM scheduled for 18th Sep."
Thank you, Austin! ( https://www.instagram.com/red_bear_ken/ )
We have a video of the set, kindly provided by Burning Book himself:
Gig 7!
A mini event at the School of Jewellery, as part of the Jewellery Quarter Festival on Saturday 26th July, 2025.
An "Ambient Special" as there was s lot going on in the building and the music had to be - in the words of Brian Eno - as ignorable as it is interesting.
We've challenged our perfomers to do exactly this!
The lineup - A500plus, Cable Snake, Cries from the LTN and The Justified Sinner.
Gigs 7 and 7a!
Once more, we have a mini event at the School of Jewellery, this time as part of the Jewellery Quarter Festival on Saturday 26th July, 2025.
This is going to be an "Ambient Special" as there is a lot going on in the building and the music has to be - in the words of Brian Eno - as ignorable as it is interessting.
We've challenged our perfomers to do exactly this!
There is a lot going on in the Jewellery Quarter that weekend. You can see the full programme here:
Through a double-booking at Centrala, we have moved the main July event to Thursday 31st. All the performance slots have been taken but there are plenty of audience tickets available. (Or just turn up at the door - always free to audiences!)
Sixth gig lineup:
Fifth gig lineup:
PLUS - Didaktik MK who helped us out by stepping up to a late-vacated slot!
Fourth (a) gig lineup:
It's our event as part of the JQ Lates event! Come along to the School of Jewellery (no tickets required) and listen to three longer sets from the Midlands (see "Our Performers" for details of their sets. We are promised electronic cutlery by Analogue Electronic Whatever, live sampling of watch and clock parts by The Justified Sinner and body patch synthesis from By Bizarre Hands.
There were a couple of people dropped out but an extra few minutes from The Tantric Obstacles soon made up for that! No mystery performer and no KATUS, who had to leave to deal with a family emergency.

Our first re-launch gig was held at Centrala in Digbeth with this stellar lineup:
Images from the event:
The event was held on an absolutely foul evening after two days of snow had brought the city to a bit of a halt. A large turnout for the superb performances in Centrala, despite the bad weather (including a blizzard during the event). The whole event was a triumphant return of the Birmingham EMOM crew . Long may it continue.
Our next event will be on 20/02/2025. See the Events page for details and booking.
