Initially founded in 1856 to unify and educate medical practitioners, it now aims to reduce isolation and promote networking through social and educational events.
Membership is open to all medical and dental graduates who live or work in the Wirral and its immediate environs. Membership costs £15 per year.
The Society was found in 1856. A few erudite physicians gathered to discuss clinical cases. The Borough Hospital opened in 1864. The society later held regular meetings in the basement and refreshments were served, in the form of tea and biscuits! These meetings continued in that location and with that format for many decades. The Society has evolved to meet the changing needs of the profession.
The Society in the 21st Century-
As CPD is now organised by other bodies, the Society has become a social society where members of the medical and dental professions, living or working in the Wirral, can meet each other, and their spouses, partners or invited friends, in an atmosphere of relaxed conviviality. A sensibly priced meal and a glass of wine are enjoyed in comfortable surroundings before a talk, on a wide variety of subjects.
Talks are not limited to medical topics (Thomas Brassey, Regeneration of the Everyman Theatre, HMY Britannia have featured). Speakers may not be medically qualified; Frank Field M.P., NADFAS lecturer Fenella Billington and Dame Lorna Muirhead have all spoken in recent years, but often they are (Dr Terence Stevenson the GMC Chair, Professor Geoff Gill are examples).
Meetings are frequently held in a private room at the Thornton Hall Hotel, but there are also outings; Ness Gardens, Leahust Veterinary Field Station, Birkenhead Town Hall and St George’s Hall have all been visited in the last few years by the society. One event which was thoroughly enjoyed by both the young and old, whether as guests or members, was the Family BBQ in September 2018.
Annually there is a Golf Tournament where the golfing members play for a magnificent trophy which is awarded at the eponymous dinner. This is usually held jointly with the Wirral Doctors' Golf Club.
We welcome new members of the medical and dental profession. Application forms are obtainable from the Society by email from birkenheadmedicalsociety@gmail.com and the annual subscription is minimal
The Presidential Board is located in the Arrowe Park Education Centre. It lists the Society's Presidents from 1856.
The diverse stories of these men and one women can be discovered in a book published by the Society (free to new members, or obtainable from the secretary -see later).
