2nd Research Workshop on Bacillus
in Food Processing and Infection Biology
4th – 6th March 2026
The 2nd Bacillus Workshop took place on March 4-6th 2026, building on the previous workshop that took place 2 years earlier in February 2024. The workshop was organised by the Biophysics and Biophotonics Group, Department of Physics, Umeå University (Magnus Andersson, Dmitry Malyshev, Daniel Nilsson)
The goal of the workshop is to bring together academics working with Bacillus species, industries and the researchers working at the interface of the two to bridge the academia-industry gap. Bacillus species can be both highly beneficial tools for as biopesticides and as platforms for production biosynthetic compounds. At the same time, Bacillus can cause persistent and highly costly contamination in food industries, such as the 2026 Nestle milk product recall, which was caused by cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus.
As such, the conference included a mixture of delegates from universities, industries and national laboratories. The conference brought together 60 researchers, with approximately half from Sweden, and half from the wider international community. The talks presented at the conferences ranged from genetic studies to practical detection of bacteria and their toxins to environmental decontamination of large areas.
Vignesh Ramnath and Daniel Nilsson won prizes for Young Scientist best talk and best poster respectively (sponsored by Uneå Biotech Incubator).
The conference was supported by UCMR, FEMS, and Valent Biosciences
Research Workshop on Bacillus
in Clinical and Agricultural Environments
29th Feb – 1st Mar 2024
Top researchers from around the globe participated, filling the schedule with top-notch presentations. The presentations spanned a wide array of topics, including bioinformatics, structures, cellular architecture, computational simulations, and detection sensors. Consequently, the nearly 100 participants had the opportunity to enjoy a plethora of engaging and informative talks. The poster sessions were well-attended, and many interesting new projects were initiated.
The conference was mainly organized by the Biophysics and Biophotonics Group at the Department of Physics, led by UCMR PI Magnus Andersson. Magnus is grateful for the hard work put in by the group members, particularly Dr. Dmitry Malyshev and PhD. student Daniel Nilsson, who took on significant responsibilities. Their efforts extended beyond the conference, including organizing activities such as ice swimming, laser tag, and social gatherings. Additionally, UCMR PI Laura Carroll from the Department of Clinical Microbiology played a pivotal role in the conference’s success, particularly in recruiting some excellent speakers.
The event was sponsored by UCMR, Umeå Biotech Incubator, Umeå universitet, Umeå kommun, and Region Västerbotten. Original: LinkedIn Post.
