Professor Isabel dos Santos Silva has a Medical degree from the University of Lisbon (Portugal), and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of London.

She joined the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in 1989.

Most of her research focus on cancer epidemiology and control, with studies being conducted in high-income countries as well as in low- and middle-income countries. Two illustrative examples of this work:

- Jointly with Dr. Valerie McCormack (from the International Agency for Research on Cancer) and other colleagues: multi-country study to investigate proximal and distal dterminants of survival from breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa. This study is funded by Susan G Komen for the Cure.

- Jointly with other LSHTM (Prof. Bianca De Stavola) and Brazilian colleagues (Prof. G Azevedo e Silva and colleagues): large record-linkage study to examine inequalities in women's access to breast and cervical cancer control activities in Brazil. This study is supported by the Newton Fund, Research Councils UK and CONFAP.

This work is underpinned by a large number of collaborations both in the United Kingdom and overseas.
