Lab Goals and Objectives
Understand the 2x3 factorial experimental design (crossing fire and grazing treatments), the specific field protocols for implementing these disturbances, and the standardized methods for collecting both shallow and deep soil samples.
Differentiate between the historical "leaf litter" paradigm and the "soil-microbial" paradigm by identifying how particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated soil organic matter (MASOM) uniquely contribute to soil carbon storage in the field.
Observe how the combination of controlled burns and herbivory influences aboveground plant productivity alongside belowground root biomass and turnover.
Describe how soil data can be used to explain why the combined, interactive effects of fire and grazing can yield completely different soil carbon outcomes across varying soil depths compared to either disturbance occurring in isolation.
Reflection Prompt
Think about all of the steps you did during lab today while you were sampling. Explain in as much detail as you can what you did, why you did it, and how it relates to the major goals of this research project. Be sure not to skip any steps no matter how trivial they may seem!
Materials, Links, Logistics, & General Itinerary (subject to change as needed)
We will meet at Goodrich (AKA the Glacial Retreat Center at 1:00 PM. Be ready to be outside in an exposed location the entire time, walking through tall grass, being around loud equipment, and handling soil, dilute bleach, and ethanol.
