The coastal/marine ecosystem is a vast community of many different and unique marine organisms.
There are many different types of marine ecosystems, including, but not limited too: the ocean, fresh water lakes, and salt marshes.
A threat to an ecosystem is anything that causes significant damage to an ecosystem. This could be something that results in the exctinction of an animal that causes a mishap in the food chain, or even environmental factors that change temperature/pH of water, etc. (Enviropol 2018).
Pollution is one of the largest threats to marine and coastal ecosystems.
These pollutants cause damage to all aspects of the ecosystems, including plants, animals, water, etc.
Common water pollutants are:
oil from ship oil spills
pesticides
trash
Natural disasters affect the quality of the water. For example hurricanes bring a lot of rain which can lower the salinity and lower the oxygen levels or also cause flooding which can then lead to misplaced marine life.
Events such as;
hurricanes
tsunamis
erosion
landslides
Organisms That Will Be Discussed
Littorina littorea
Daphnia spp.
Spartina alterniflora
Karenia brevis
Glomus spp.
