From the outside, the 2100 Bioanalyzer has two points of interest. The status LED which indicates the current status of the instrument, and the lid.
The status LED has 4 outputs:
Green light Instrument is switched on and ready for measurement.
Green blinking Measurement is running.
Orange blinking Instrument is busy (running self-diagnostic, for example).
Red light Instrument is not ready for measurement. Switch the instrument off and on again. If the problem persists, contact Agilent service.
When opening the lid, you will be presented with a seating area in which the assay chip is placed. Furthermore there will be 16 electrodes that are located in the lid. Special care should be taken to ensure that this environment remains dust free.
The optics detection system is located in the chip seating area. Avoid touching the optics of this system. Furthermore ensure the lens of the detection system remains dust free.
Dust can be removed from the lens using a lens tissue and isopropanol.
The 16 electrodes are contained within the electrode cartridge.
The electrodes should be cleaned after every run, using the electrode cleaning chip that is included with every new set of bioanalyzer chips. Use nuclease free water to fill the cleaning chip.
The electrode cartridge can be removed from the lid. Certain laboratories will keep two separate electrode cartridges - One for DNA work, and one for RNA work.
The cartridge can be removed by releasing the metal level inside the lid, as sown below.
The 3 components of the lid can be separated about for cleaning purposes, or in the case in which one of the 16 pins are bent and require replacement. Turning the bayonet socket counter-clockwise, will release the assembly.
A thorough cleaning can be performed every 3 months or sooner if the electrode is suspected to be dirty. Turn off the Bioanalyzer instrument, remove the cartridge, remove the electrode pin set and soak for 15 minutes in deionized water. Sonicate the pinset in a clean beaker with deionized water and/or use a soft toothbrush. Ensure all components are dry before reassembly.
