Climate Change summit
Binghamton University, Broome County Planning, American Red Cross, United Way of Broome County, and Southern Tier 8 are working together to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change to our local community through a collaborative Climate Change Summit, scheduled for April 26th and 27th, 2024. This event will bring together community organizations, stakeholders, and residents to strategize, innovate, and take decisive action towards climate resilience and sustainability.
The Climate Change Summit underscores the commitment of Binghamton University, Broome County Planning, American Red Cross, United Way of Broome County, and Southern Tier 8 to proactive climate action and community resilience. By fostering collaboration and engagement, this initiative aims to catalyze transformative solutions and inspire meaningful change.
Day 1: For Organizations
When: April 26th (Friday), 8:00am to 5:00pm

On Day 1 of the Summit, scheduled activities included interactive working groups aiming at developing comprehensive climate change adaptation plans. Representatives from community organizations convened to participate in focused discussions and workshops designed to address critical areas of concern. Working groups engage in identifying potential climate change-related challenges, assessing community expectations and capacities for action, outlining organizational roles, and collaboratively developing actionable strategies. The goal was to establish ongoing working groups that will continue to meet regularly, fostering ongoing preparation and response efforts within the community. Binghamton University's Binghamton 2 Degrees initiative will support ongoing efforts.

Day 2: For Organizations

The second day of the Summit focused on disseminating progress updates from Day 1 and engaging community members in hands-on activities and educational sessions. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a climate simulation exercise utilizing En-ROADS, an online simulator that enables exploration of cross-sector climate solutions.
Following the simulation exercise, participants were split into groups tailored for homeowners and renters. Representatives from various organizations lead activities focused on energy, food, waste management, resiliency, and health, equipping attendees with practical strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change in their personal lives.
Additionally, ICS Industries sponsored a recycling collection event for electronics (such as TV's, monitors, computers, etc.), appliances (such as microwaves, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, etc.), books, newspapers, magazines, and paper documents to be shredded, all at no charge during Day 2 of the Climate Change Summit.
