I am Billy Dolan, a first generation college graduate as of May 2024. My bachelor's of science was in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Aerospace Engineering. I am currently moving towards the end of my master's of science in Aerospace Engineering, and intend to enter industry and/or seek funding for the completed RDRE design when it is ready.
I am originally from Cleveland and decided to pursue mechanical engineering at UD because of the strong program, interdisciplinary program, and affordability. I have always wanted to work on jet engines, spacecraft, and I would like to go for being an astronaut as well. My UD projects, master's program and work experience have enabled me to work on jet engines, rocket motors, design for spaceflight, meet an astronaut, and work on the bleeding edge of technology. This has continued to fuel me as I push into more difficult topics as I want to continue growing while facing very difficult technical challenges.
Spectral Energies, LLC
Research Engineer
Applied systems engineering projects consisting of designing, developing, and implementing all parts of the process across software, electrical, and mechanical requirements.
Research and development of Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs).
Swagelok
Manufacturing Engineering Co-op Swagelok
Manufacturing Co-op in FSG.
Developed an enhanced and more ergonomic fixture along with creating a documented process for operations.
Data cleansed a business sustaining database and created a 55 page documentation on inaccuracies through 120,000 lines of data.
Developed an automated solution through communication across multiple sites and many different groups within the organization.
Wrote a business case driven by cost saving calculations and ergonomic improvement using an analysis of operations data.
Continued improvement of the database and Power BI report constructed during the Product Investigations role.
Compiled onboarding materials for Interns and Co-ops utilizing materials from previous rotations and resources from this summer experience.
Swagelok
Product Investigations Co-Op
Examined customer returns for reports of damage or defects and wrote reports detailing examined condition or tested performance of the parts.
Developed a database within Microsoft Excel for detailing customer and supplier audits.
Created a Power BI report concisely representing data from that database along with development documentation.
Conducted a mechanical experiment for observing product performance.
Conducted a burst testing experiment on modified products to observe product behavior and performance.
Wrote Engineering reports describing results of the experiments, solutions to enhance product performance, and clearer phrasing on product use.
Swagelok
Project Engineering Intern
Continuous Improvement Intern for FSG.
Designed, prototyped, and worked with suppliers to acquire new part carriages to bring standardization and increased throughput in NACE work cells.
Researched part carriages through the approved supplier list to find one $1800 under budget and met company standards.
Developed a concise Power BI report displaying important work center metrics from all work centers in the Swagelok Main Plant.
Created supplemental directions covering navigation, information presented, abilities of the report, and explanations on editing.
Completed a time study on a novel process and submitted recommendations for work cell improvements and process improvements.
Assembled operator workbenches, a hand stamping assembly, and then configured the work cell to the operators’ preferences.
Tested the hand stamper and followed the validation plan by hand inspecting 300 parts during the stamper’s first order.
Cutting Dynamics Inc.
Intern
Worked on the manufacturing floor on secondary tasks and operating machinery such as a triform sheet hydroforming press, HV1, Adige tube laser cutter, spindle drill press, and LVP8 Laser cutter.
Worked on product maintenance and visual inspections.
Worked on jobs ranging from sanding orders of 30 parts to operating the adige cutter for over 13,000 pipes.

University of Dayton
Bachelor's of Mechanical Engineering, Minor in Aerospace Engineering
I am currently a Graduate Aerospace Engineering Student at the University of Dayton, completing a Master's Thesis with the University of Leicester, Space Park Leicester, NASA JPL, and the University of Dayton. This thesis will be conducted on the topic of designing an in-space 3rd stage of propulsion based around a new Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) design. This will be my main contribution to our group project for performing a feasibility study and spacecraft design for an upcoming helio-physics and interstellar medium mission proposal.
I completed my Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Dayton in May 2024.
