Memorable Character
AMY INOUYE - Book designer, Chicken Boys Mom
Amy Inouye, is a highly sought after book designer that works primarily on high end illustrated “coffee table” books and is the text and cover designer of dozens of books including Knott’s Preserved authored by Chris Merritt and Eric Lynxwiler and published by Angel City Press. The book signing of the richly illustrated history of Knott’s Berry Farm provided the opportunity to cross paths with Amy in the parks Bird Cage Theatre in 2015. In addition to being a talented book designer, Amy is also co-owner of Future Studio in the Highland Park District of Los Angeles that hosts a variety of genres in her gallery including painting and sculpture, photography, performance, music and installations. She’s also the caretaker of “Chicken Boy”, a twenty two foot high customized “muffler man” sculpture from the International fiberglass Company. The figure of a young man with a chicken head holding an oversize bucket of fried chicken once stood on route 66 in downtown L.A. as the mascot of the short lived Chicken Boy Fried Chicken Restaurant. Amy snatched Chicken Boy from certain destruction and probable meltdown in 1984 for the cost of a crane, dismantling, transportation and for rental on two storage units (one held his body and the other held his head!). What she didn’t anticipate before adopting the big boy was it taking 23 years, scores of permits, and more than a few bucks to find Chicken Boy a suitable permanent location. Happily, Chicken Boy has found a new home on Route 66 atop the reinforced roof of Amy’s Future Studio Gallery where the fiberglass big boy has achieved local fame and official historical status and as the focus of Amy’s gallery and appearing on posters, T-shirts, mugs, L.A. memorabilia and is the subject of documentaries, newspaper and magazine articles, and countless photographs. After five decades, and thanks to his adopted mom and memorable character Amy Inouye, Chicken Boy is once again standing tall. -Bill
