THE ART CORNER
When Disneyland opened in July of 1955 park guests were able to purchase souvenirs and original Disney collectibles from a temporary striped tent at the end of Main Street USA, however it wasn’t until September of the following year that a permanent retail store, “The Art Corner”, was open for business. The large colorful modular building, located near Hobbyland in Tomorrowland, contained racks and tables of an ever increasing range of Disney merchandise including coloring books, flip books, animation kits and coveted original animation cel’s from popular Disney feature films and TV. Select hand drawn and painted transparent cellulose acetate sheets, once discarded to save space, were carefully matted with an authenticity sticker applied to the back and sold for a whopping $1.65 (an animated feature film required as many as 100,000 cels!). In 1960 The Art Corner shared space with a walk-through exhibit, “The Art of Animation” that ran for 6 years until both were closed permanently to make way for the first of several Tomorrowland renovations. Original vintage Disney collectibles were once again available in the park for a 10 year period beginning in 1976 at the Disneyana shop on Main Street USA. Disney Stores sold production cels from The Little Mermaid at prices from $2500 to$3500 and unique cels have sold at art auctions for as much as $50,000.
Attached are original hand painted celluloid acetate animation cels used in Walt Disney productions and purchased in Disneyland at The Art Corner in 1966: Mischievous Tom Thumb from “The Truth about Mother Goose” from the TV show Wonderful World of Color. The fun loving bear Baloo from the film “The Jungle Book”.
